10 Simple DIY Halloween Costumes

Halloween is right around the corner. The main theme of this holiday is, of course, the costume. While some people may opt for the costume shop style, others may choose an elaborate character’s ensemble. However, you can create a clever and cute costume with just a few items. Here’s a list of a few super easy DIY costumes to try.

1. Cereal killer

All you need here is empty cereal boxes, a plastic knife or two and some fake blood. Take a plain t-shirt and stick the empty cereal boxes to the shirt. Add some fake blood splatter around the cereal boxes and put the knives in the cereal boxes. This simple costume will definitely be a hit.

2. Where’s Waldo

Possibly one of the simplest costumes ever, all you need is a red and white striped shirt for Waldo. Extra points include the hat and glasses for Waldo. All these items are easily found either in your closet or a friend’s.

3. Identity thief

Another clever costume, all you need is a ton of those “My Name Is…” stickers. Fill them out with random names and stick ‘em all over your person. Ta da!

4. Lady bug

This costume is open to a great deal of personal flair. Simply, all you could do is take a black shirt and put red dots on it, or vice versa. However, if you wanted to get more intricate, you could mix in black tights and a red tutu, and make your own antenna from a headband. Cute and easy

5. Minne Mouse

Another costume open to the wearer’s interpretation: Minnie. This costume may just entail black and red clothing and mouse ears. However, you may feel inclined to throw in a tutu or a red and white polka-dotted dress as well.

6. Rosie the Riveter

Chalk this one up as one of the simplest costumes known. Get yourself a jean/ chambray shirt (super easy to find these days especially since it’s on trend) and a red bandana. Throw on some red lipstick and be ready to flash her famous pose.

7. Boo from "Monsters Inc."

Not only is this costume adorable and nostalgic, it would also be super comfy to wear. Grab a big pink t-shirt, purple leggings and white sneakers. Tie your hair up until two pigtails and you’re ready to go.

8. Cupcake

This costume may take a bit more dedication, but its essential elements are simple: khaki or dark pants, a white/ pink/ another color scalloped top. Cut out sprinkle-shaped pieces of colored paper or felt and stick them to your top. Add a little cherry on your head for a finishing touch.

9. Emojis

An emoji costume is simple and trendy. The twin emoji only needs black leotards and your bff. The sunglasses emoji is pretty straightforward. The salsa dancing emoji may be slightly more difficult but once you find that perfect red dress you’re set.

10. Burglar

Another costume that would only take a trip to your closet. Find a black and white striped shirt, black pants and shoes. Bonus points if you get a ski mask or a fake “money bag.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
