Summer is one of my favorite times of year for many reasons: sitting around the pool, hanging out with friends, road trips, but most of all it’s the endless amount of TV to be watched. There is no more school, which basically means no more responsibilities. If I want to stay up until three in the morning watching my new Netflix favorite then by God I will. You are now free to guiltlessly watch hours and hours of TV, so now the question is, what should you watch? Worry not, I am here to rescue you with a list of some of the best Netflix has to offer.
1. "Gilmore Girls"
This is, hands down, my favorite show in the world and for those of you who know me that’s really saying something. It is witty and perfect and you will fall instantly in love with every character that makes up the quirky town of Stars Hollow. So if you haven’t watched this show yet, do it now and make sure you have a box of tissues because it will change your life.
2. "The Office"
Who would have thought that a tiny paper company in Scranton, PA would be the perfect setting for one of the greatest comedy shows ever. This show will at the same time have you laughing until you’re crying and have your heart actually break with emotion. No other show so perfectly idealizes a desk job.
3. "The West Wing"
This show, I would have to say, really ties for first place on my list of all time favorites. It is smart and witty and really expects a lot from its audience. It piqued my interest in politics and gave me a window into what really goes on at the White House (a television White House, but that’s close enough). And if it wasn’t great enough on its own, there is now a weekly podcast called The West Wing Weekly that goes through each episode, dissecting, discussing, and analyzing. So just in case I wasn’t a big enough nerd, this really pushed it over the edge.
4. "Chuck"
I feel like this show is really underrated. It that perfect blend of action and comedy. It knows not to take itself too seriously and makes sure the audience knows it, too. Don’t worry, they also managed to squeeze a great love story in between all the fighting and shooting.
5. "Gossip Girl"
If you ever wondered what it would be like to be super rich and live in uptown Manhattan, well here’s your chance to find out. Be warned, though, once you start you will be sucked in by the world of the elite Upper East Siders. You will follow the drama of these characters like they are your own friends, constantly trying to figure out who could be this mysterious “gossip girl”. All I can say is, don’t be afraid to think outside the box.
6. "Parks and Recreation"
If you loved "The Office," then you’ll love this show even more, and even if you didn’t love "The Office," this show will be your new heaven on earth. This show is quite simply the perfect package. It has comedy, heart, talent, city government and so much more. Amy Poehler is on this show, Chris Pratt is on this show, Nick Offerman is on this show, Rob Lowe is on this show. I honestly just don’t think it can get any better. This show will open up your heart in ways that you never thought would be possible, you’re in for the ride of your life.
7. "Sherlock"
Whether you’re a big Sherlock Holmes fan or not, this show will have you on your feet, or rather sitting on your couch frantically hitting play for the next episode. It is so intense and detailed that you’ll find yourself watching the episodes twice just to figure out exactly what happened. The only downside is that there are only three episodes per season and only three seasons and they only make new episodes every couple of years. But come on, it’s Benedict Cumberbatch, how can you say no.
8. "Royal Pains"
I recently discovered this show and immediately wondered where it had been all my life. I hard core pounded this show and found that I had fallen in love with the main character (I’m sure it’s not surprising to you that this is not the first time this has happened to me). It is a great mix of medicine, drama, and comedy and I can promise that you will not regret that hours you spend holed up in your room watching it.
9. "30 Rock"
Tina Fey! That’s all I feel I really need to say. Except Alec Baldwin and Tracy Morgan, Jack McBrayer, Jane Krakowski, and Tina Fey!
10. "Grey’s Anatomy"
This may be listed last, but it is certainly not the least. If you watch this show from start to finish, you will basically become a doctor as well as a broken shell of a person. But don’t be discouraged, it’s all worth it, every surgery, every relationship, every breakup, and yes every death is worth it. People may say this is just a glorified soap opera, but you can just tell them to sit down and shut up because Grey’s is life.
So just follow this on your incredible incredible summer -- happy binge watching.
