It can be very overwhelming when choosing a new show to binge-watch on Netflix. There are many factors that go into this decision process: “What genre do I feel like watching, Am I willing to avoid spoilers and How long is each episode usually?” Here are some shows across all genres that I got to binge-watch and have fallen in love with over the last few years that I think you should check out this spring semester.
1. Parks and Recreation
This mockumentary comedy follows Leslie Knope (played by Amy Poehler) and her coworkers as they endure many adventures in working for the Parks and Recreation department in their small town of Pawnee, Indiana. This show has also won the title of my all-time favorite television show, so you be the judge if this one is worthy enough on your list.
2. Jessica Jones
Marvel is just everywhere these days, but I am not complaining about that. As Netflix does one series on each of the four members of The Defenders (think of it as a rougher version of the Avengers), this show focuses on Jessica Jones (played by Krysten Ritter) starting her own detective agency as she attempts to leave her haunting superhero past behind. Although this show is graphic at times, the plot and characters are addictive and are unlike any other Marvel hero.
3. Friends
I had to include a classic on this list. Not only does this show make you feel good and laugh a lot, but you can find yourself in each of the six characters that make up this original group of pals. Noticing that the show has ten seasons may cause you to hesitate, but trust me when I say this show is a good investment for binging— especially with your friends.
4. Stranger Things
This show has literally taken over everything— not to mention its stellar cast (half of which include actors under the age of 17). Surrounding the small town of Hawkins, Indiana in the early 1980s, this show focuses on the mysterious disappearance of 12-year-old Will Byers and how his family and three best friends try to find him. Oh, and there is also freaky monsters, a young psychokinetic girl and a whole lot of 80’s nostalgia.
5. The Office
This is also a mockumentary-style comedy that documents the workers in the fictional office of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. With incredibly original characters (two of them played by Steve Carell and John Krasinski), this show will actually make you want to work in an office… well, sort of.
6. Blue Bloods
Out of all the cop shows out there nowadays, this one is probably my favorite. This primetime drama revolves around the Reagans— a multigenerational family of New York City cops— and their weekly endeavors in their line of duty while staying true to their family values. This show will make you think about family and the great lengths people would (or should) go to do what they think is right.
7. Scandal
From the great mind of Shonda Rhimes (creator of Grey’s Anatomy) comes this ABC political thriller surrounding the life of Olivia Pope— Washington D.C.’s Public Relations mastermind. From dealing with the problems at her crisis management firm to the secret affair she is having with President Fitzgerald Grant, this show never fails to bring on the drama— as well as the wine and popcorn.
8. 13 Reasons Why
This Netflix original, based on the book by the same name, revolves around the suicide of teenager Hannah Baker (played by Katherine Langford) and the 13 tapes she leaves behind for the people who had to do with the reason why she did it. This show brings awareness to serious issues in society, like bullying and rape, so do consider that you will be watching very heavy and graphic material.
9. Once Upon A Time
You have heard the saying before, but not quite like this. Another ABC primetime drama, this show revolves around more than a few Disney fairytale characters in the town of Storybrooke, Maine, where they are all cursed to forget that they are actually just that. With flashbacks from their fairytale pasts and a twisted family tree, this show is definitely not like the stories you once heard of.
10. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
From the great mind of Tina Fey, this comedy focuses on a woman starting her life over after she had been held captive in a bunker by her pastor for fifteen years. With a thirty-year-old stuck in the 90's and a
