For as long as I can remember I have loved old people. Lately, it's becoming even more of an obsession as I realize all that they have to offer to the world. A lot of times, they get overlooked, but we should understand the importance they have in our society.
1. They have a lot to offer.
When you give them the time to talk, they have more they are willing to give than most people expect. They longed to be heard and enjoy life just as we all do. They have advice, funny jokes, cool skills and most importantly they have cookies to offer.
2. Their stories.
I could listen to an old person tell me stories about their life forever. They are real, raw, and heartfelt. Stories about their first love, their grandchildren, and why things were better in their time. They have lived through more than some of us could imagine and they are full of stories to tell all about it.
3. Their wisdom.
Because they have lived through so much more, they have a better understanding of life and morals. Their wisdom expounds from that and they are always willing to listen and give out a helping hand.
4. Their baking skills.
This one isn't as serious as the rest. But on the real who doesn't love Grandma's home baked goods? It's like an automatic thing you become good at once you're over the age of 60. Plus, they are always willing to bake/cook for you whenever you want.
5. Their beautiful souls.
They have hearts of gold and childlike spirits. They appreciate life around them and love every extra second they get to be alive. They are beautiful from the inside out. They don't just pretend to care, they actually do.
6. They love you no matter what.
Because of their beautiful souls, they love you unconditionally. Even if you don't call them enough or stop by to see them as much as you should, they will still love you. Those crazy dreams you have, they are also the ones that believe in you.
7. They've lived life before you.
They understand that life is hard and we're overwhelmed and that we make mistakes, because they've been there too, and a lot more than you have. They are living proof that you can make it, because they did too.
8. History.
They are literally walking history books. The stuff you learn about in class? Yeah some of them have lived through it. To see history through their eyes and their stories will be more powerful than anything you could learn in school.
9. Their time is coming soon.
Maybe that's a little harsh, but it's life right? Because of the never ending cycle of life, we need to take more time to cherish things that will soon be gone. Invest in things that make you a better person and enrich your soul, like being with the elderly.
10. They will always hang out with you.
Being honest, their schedules don't fill up too fast. Therefore that gives you a plethora of opportunities to be with them. They will never say no or cancel on you last minute because something better came up. Some of my favorite days are spent watching my favorite tv show with my grandmother.
Let's be honest, old people are the real MVPs.
