10 Reasons Why Not Having A Car On Campus Sucks

My past few years at college have gone by extremely fast and I’ve been lucky enough to have a car here on campus. This year is different though because for the first time since I was 17 I don’t have a car. Having only a few months left of college I thought I could get through it but I realized it sucks and here are 10 reasons why.

1. Getting rides from friends can be difficult.

You don’t want to be annoying but when it’s 11:30 at night and your cat is out of cat food you kind of need to go to Walmart ASAP. Finding a friend that’s willing to drop everything and help you can be a struggle at times.

2. You do more walking than usual.

Sure you don’t have to worry about parking on campus, but walking around a lot can get exhausting. Sure it’s good for you but I would rather drive to Walgreens than walk 15 minutes to get there.

3. Online shopping becomes your best friend.

Getting out to the mall is basically not an option anymore so if you really want that 7 for $27 sale you got to open up that laptop and wait 3-5 days for shipping. No fun.

4. Downtown Kent gets old.

Downtown is exciting when you first come to Kent and you want to explore all the shops and it’s such a quick walk but they don’t have a Forever 21 or Victoria’s Secret. If they did I would spirit downtown every day.

5. You miss jamming out in the car.

Admit it, you have put on your favorite song and screamed every word thinking you have a rock star voice. I had a car playlist and performed a mini concert to my steering wheel driving to the store. Not only is it fun to do but makes you forget about the piles of homework back at home.

6. Sometimes you just want to be alone.

Driving with your best friend to go get ice cream is all fun and games but sometimes you just need some alone time. Time to think things through or about life or anything honestly. You love your best friend and all but space is good even if it’s just for a little bit.

7. You barely get to go home.

Being only an hour away from home is nice for me because I know I can zip home for a day and pick things up, play with my dog (take some food) and be back on campus quickly

8. You would be SOL if there was an emergency.

Yes, I have a roommate that has a car and she drives me around (I love you thank you), but if she wasn’t there and something happened to my cat or me because I am so clumsy, I couldn’t get where I needed quickly.

9. People have to come pick you up.

If I ever want to go over to a friend’s house or my boyfriend’s house, they would need to pick me up which can be annoying to come get me and then drive back to their place but when I had a car I could text them saying I’ll be there soon and zip over.

10. You almost forget how to drive.

Yes, I’ve had my license since I was 16 but not driving for a period of time you kind of almost forget how to drive or park or pull out of a spot. It’s been over a month since the last time I drove so I’m allowed to have a minute or two of blanking out!

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.
