*written after a sunrise paddle board ride in northern Michigan*
Everyone can talk the talk about how awesome their home state is, but very few can walk the walk like Michigan can. This is because the mitten has a little thing called "northern Michigan" up its sleeve: a hidden gem that is just well-known enough to attract attention, but foreign enough to stay pristine. Regardless of where you go, northern Michigan in summertime is a place where memories are sure to be made (just ask Kid Rock).
1. It's quiet, but not too quiet.
The peacefulness that comes with a limited amount of cars, construction and people creates a secluded ambiance with wildlife, waves and trees blowing in the wind. They all combine to give you the best nights sleep you've had in a long time.
2. You get a little slice of nature.
Even if you're not an outdoorsy person, everyone could use a break from those concrete walls in exchange for some greens and lungs filled with fresh air.
3. Sunrises and sunsets are 10 times better.
Watching the sun rise over a sparkling lake or waiting for the sun to set with an ice-cold beer in your hand is a lot better than watching it from your bedroom. And it translates to a relaxing start or end to your day.
4. Fresh air becomes a drug.
You can't put your finger on it, but the air in northern Michigan, as its environment, is clean and pure. A sunny-and-75 day with a light breeze and lake waves rolling in is topped off with clean and fresh air, something that cannot be found in the city.
5. Bonfires are a nightly occurrence.
Roasting marshmallows, always a crowd favorite, has most people looking forward to summer nights in northern Michigan. Sitting around a bonfire with a drink in your hand listening to the crackling of the fire and the laughter of the people you love.
6. Lake activities consume your day.
Going "up north" usually means you are near a lake of some kind. Lake activities like sea-doo rides, tubing and boat cruises are a guarantee when the sun is shining. Not to mention sand volleyball and corn hole, which are other fan favs.
7. Sleeping in is not frowned upon.
Because it is so quiet, it's easy to catch up on some sleep that may be lacking during the week. Breakfast at 10 is the norm, and you still have plenty of hours of daylight to catch some rays (and sleep more).
8."Up north clothes" are a thing.
You usually don't see vacationers at their cabin making a fashion statement. T-shirts and shorts are all you need (don't forget your bathing suit). A big crew neck shirt and some comfy pants are the perfect staples for a cool summer night.
9. Cell phone use is limited.
Although some people may not be able to live without their phones, usually cell phone service at a cabin or hotel up north is spotty at best. This gives most an opportunity to take a break from electronics and start enjoying the beauty in front of them.
10. You won't want to leave.
The ambiance that comes with a northern Michigan setting is one you won't be able to shake off. You'll dread the Sunday afternoon that you have to drive back to work or school. With the bliss of northern Michigan on your mind, you think about the next time you'll return to do it all over again.
