When first watching New Girl, I predicted I'd only be interested in Jess' character. I was wrong. Nick Miller is the fictional character I've always needed, because he possesses nearly all of the qualities I want in a friend. He's far from perfect, but he's human and easy to love. Besides, we all could use an emotional fluffer (platonic boyfriend) right?
1. He's honest
While we don’t always like to hear it, having a friend that’s always honest with you is a blessing. They won’t sugarcoat anything for you and will always give you their real opinion when asked for it. Also, they’ll call you out on being rude, inconsiderate, irrational, or ridiculous because they don’t want you to act in a manner you’ll feel guilty about later. They’re honest because they care.
2. He tries to keep the both of you calm in stressful situations
He knows you have a tendency to freak out immediately in uncomfortable situations, so he’ll try to act calm for the both of you. However, sometimes he may be the one freaking out and chaos ensues.
3. He has a good taste in music
Nick Miller enjoys listening to Taylor Swift, worships Beyoncé, and admires Adele. Need I say more? He is a spirit animal.
4. He isn't afraid to get out of his comfort zone around you
Whether it be dancing at a pregame or singing in the car, he isn't afraid to show his goofier side to you. Once he gets out of his comfort zone, so can you, establishing an even stronger friendship. He'll be a weirdo if you'll be a weirdo.
5. He gives realistic advice
Once again, there’s no sugarcoating in this friendship. He won’t give you some cliche advice, but rather the realities of life. He knows that life just kind of sucks. While that sounds harsh, sometimes it's a fact we need to face. It keeps him grounded, and it will keep you grounded instead of in the clouds.
6. He trusts you enough to talk about his emotions
As he shows you his goofy side, he eventually will show you his emotional side. Screw the stereotype that men aren't emotional, Nick has emotions just like any other human. My heart nearly broke when Nick began discussing his failed relationship, but it immediately made him more real for me. I personally consider trust a foundation of a healthy friendship. Nick believes people generally suck, so he doesn't trust just anyone with the secrets of his enemy, his "inner" self.
7. He's flawed
We're all flawed, but our flaws can be our strengths, as demonstrated by Nick Miller. He's been hurt, so he's empathetic and sensitive. Nick is aware of his flaws, which makes him more relatable and easy to talk to. You can open up to him without fearing criticism, because he knows he's not perfect, so you don't have to be either.
8. He's just as weird as you are
"Weirdos" probably sums it up best. As mentioned before, you're both out of your comfort zone around each other, and thus embrace each other's weirdness. There's no judgement here. You know you're both crazy, but that that's not a bad thing. The term "weird" has no negative connotation within your friendship.
9. He's one of your biggest supporters
Despite his brutal honesty and harsh realities, Nick supports all of his friends. Whenever you doubt yourself, he'll reassure you of your strengths. He'll remind you that you're amazing and on the right path. He believes in you, and knows that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to.
10. He just gets you
He knows you almost better than you know yourself. He can tell you need a little support just by the energy you bring to a room. He knows you're angry just by the look on your face. He remembers what you love and what you hate. Simply, he almost always knows what you need.
