10 Reasons Why Greek Life Ruined my Life.

In the fall of 2014 I joined the Greek Community at Southern Miss as a Junior. When I told people that I had decided to go through recruitment I often got looked at like I had just said, "I've decided to join a cult and tomorrow I'm shaving my head." Well, the fall came, I went through recruitment, and I accepted a bid from my sorority. Ever since that day, I realized more and more that maybe Greek Life wasn't what I thought it would be.

Let's start with a simple reason why Greek Life is the worst:

  1.  T-shirts. Tons and tons of t-shirts. Seriously. Who needs so many comfortable, fun shirts?! Also, who wants to show that you're apart of a group of women who does great things for the world? All it does is take up space in my closet.... and my life.
  2. Who needs to have countless amounts of fun day after day, night after night? And I'm not even talking about the parties. This is just from hanging out with your sisters. I mean really, who needs to waste their time having fun with great friends?
  3. Speaking of friends.... who needs to gain 100+ friends over night? Great friends are exhausting right? It's so annoying to have someone to go to at any point and always having a friend willing to ride with you to Taco Bell at two o'clock in the morning.
  4. People Skills. When has people skills ever helped anyone later in life? Learning to be able to talk to anyone, about anything is not a good skill to have. It cannot possibly get you an awesome job in the future.
  5. Philanthropy. I hate being able to better myself by helping the less fortunate. I hate donating money to sick children. I hate going to animal shelters and playing with cute cats. Showing generosity to those in your community is the worst.
  6. Campus Involvement. Joining Greek Life got me involved all over my campus. Because of my sorority, I became a Resident Assistant, which got me a huge scholarship. All I want out of life is to pay back student loans until I'm 75. THANKS A LOT GREEK LIFE.
  7. Resume Building. Because of the involvement and philanthropy that has come with joining Greek Life, my resume is so much more impressive. In the future this beefed-up resume could lead me to a good job. I just want to live with my parents forever. Is that too much to ask?!
  8. Connections. I have met countless people after joining Greek Life. Some of those people are powerful and could help me get a job later in life, even years down the road. It's like I'm not supposed to live at home forever!
  9. New Family. Joining my sorority made me meet people that I cannot imagine not having in my life. People that I would consider my family and that I love just as much as my biological sibling. Great. All I need is more people to love having in my life.
  10. Constant Support System. The people, my new family, always have my back and constantly support me. These girls lift me up when I'm down and get me back on my feet. That has to be the worst.

So, I guess I was right, Greek Life was not what I thought it would be. It is SO much more. I have been given people that are in my life more often than my own family. These people are with me 24 hours a day and they constantly make me smile. Greek Life has bettered me as a person and has helped me give back to a community and a university that has given so much to me. Greek Life has opened the door to a much brighter future. Greek Life has become my new reality and has taken over my life. Thank you, sisters, for keeping my life interesting.

With that being said, join Greek Life if you dare. But don't say I didn't warn you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
