As you get older the more responsibilities you have to worry about. As a college student you have to deal with classes and the job that you may or may not have on the side. Balancing all of that on top of your social life is hard enough when you are healthy, but when you are sick? Forget about it. As a college student who is currently fighting a cold, and losing, I am going to tell you the reasons why as a college student a cold is the end of the world.
1. Tired
As someone who works until 11:30 at night at least twice a week and has early classes scattered throughout my schedule I, much like everyone else, am tired on a good day. But when you are sick the thought of getting out of bed to take on the day is just disheartening. I don't want to roll out of bed when I am healthy much less when my body is busy fighting off an infection.
2. Judgement
Whether it be a stuffy nose or a cough your symptoms will not be silent. The stares that follow you as you go down the walkways make you more uncomfortable than you already are. I get that a girl carrying a box of tissues isn't something you see everyday but come on, you don't have to make my illness more obvious. Or when you blow your nose in class and everyone turns to look at you. Like I know it's not the prettiest sound but could you please mind your own business?
3. Tests
Having a test when you are healthy is stressful enough but having one when you are sick? Downright awful. Trying to study when you can't keep your eyes open is impossible and taking a test when you can't even focus on what is right in front of you is horrible. I definitely failed that math test.
4. Desk Space
When you are sick there are some necessities, such as medicine, tissues, hand sanitizer and VapoRub. Now the desks found in the dorms are small enough without all of this extra stuff on top of it. How am I supposed to type up a paper if I have nowhere to put my arms when I am typing?
5. Roommates
Now I don't know about you but when I am sick I don't get much sleep at night, and it isn't for lack of trying. I just end up coughing and blowing my nose all night. Now if I lived alone this wouldn't be a big deal, but I have two roommates who are separated from me by paper thin walls who hear everything I do. Every cough, sneeze, nose blow and throw up a break in between is heard by my poor roommates. This also means that sadly they have a likelihood of getting sick as well. Sorry guys!
6. Medicine
A lot of the time you can't take medicine on an empty stomach and if you are like me you can't eat right after you get up. This means that I have to wait until the afternoon, after all of my classes for the day, to take my first dose of medication because I can't take it in the allotted time available in the morning.
7. Supplies
When you are sick the last thing that you want to do is drive to the store so that you can get all of the supplies you need in order to deal with the illness. Now if you were at home you could have someone else to get it, maybe your mom or dad. But when you are in college it is all down to you. That means you have to get behind the wheel, drive to the store, walk around the store getting everything that you may need, drive back to the dorm, and then lug everything back to your room. Sounds like lots of fun.
8. Health Services
Now my school offers Student Health Services, which is fine and dandy except that by the time that I have the chance to call and make an appointment they are already closed. Thanks for nothing.
9. Homesickness
For many people, especially college freshmen, this may be the first time that they are sick without the support of their family. This may be saddening or scary for some because they feel like they don't know how to do this on their own. This just adds stress that is unnecessary on the body that could affect how long it takes to get over whatever made them sick
10. Jobs
As previously stated, many college students have a job on top of their class schedule. When you are sick you don't want to overwork yourself, especially if you are just starting to get better. Regression is the worst. This means that you may have to call out of work or find a replacement for your shift. This sucks in the long run because you are losing that money that you desperately need.
