10 Reasons Why College Is Like Prison

Get out while you still can.

10 Reasons Why College Is Like Prison
Scott Savage

Have you ever wanted to see what prison life was like without committing a crime? Apply to a university and live in the dorms. The experiences seem quite comparable, and here are ten reasons why.

1. Cinder Block Walls

As soon as I walked into the room, the first thing I thought of was... jail cell. From the awful not-quite-white-but-not-quite-blue paint to the one fluorescent light above, I knew that I needed to throw in some lamps to warm up the room.

2. Potatoes

Every meal. Every. Single. One. If you aren't in love with this starch, you might as well not even come to prison, er, college. French fries, Anna potatoes (what?), scalloped potatoes. You name it. Potatoes.

3. You Can't Take the Screen Out of Your Window

That's a fine. You definitely can't leave out of your window, even if your car is parked directly outside. That's an even bigger fine.

4. Random Alarms

Fire alarms at three in the afternoon, or even three in the morning. If you go out of the wrong door, an alarm goes off. If you hold the door to the dorms open too long, you get a loud reminder. If you try to go out of the dorms right after the door shut, an alarm goes off.

5. Public Showers

Please, put a door on the shower stalls. Please. The curtains are not cutting it.

6. There's a Random Sink In Your Room

While it's great for brushing your teeth and washing your face and dishes, it also falls off of the wall when you lean too much on it.

7. "Murderer's" Carpet

My roommate and I came up with this term. You can spill anything on the floor and the carpet just soaks it up. Someone could get murdered, and no one would be able to tell. I promise you.

8. An Exercise Room at the End of the Hall

Unlike prison, it is rarely used.

9. Your Room is Checked Nightly

Someone has a key to your door and comes knocking at midnight to make sure you're still there. RA's are like your own personal prison guard.

10. Visitors Have to be Checked in Before They Can Stay

If they aren't, that's a fine as well. This one really isn't a big deal, as most of us rarely have any visitors.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
