With Formal Recruitment just around the corner, the opportunity to join Greek life is running through many students' heads. If you aren't sure what Greek life is about or you've been on the fence about signing up for recruitment, here's why you should go Greek at LMU:
1. You will meet a ton of new people that you may have never talked to otherwise.
Just going through the recruitment process gives you a chance to make new friends. You attend each sorority with a large group of girls going through the same process, and when you're waiting around it gives you a chance to talk to all the people around you. I still say hi to other girls on campus that were in my group from the first day of recruitment, even when we joined different sororities.
2. You gain a home away from home.
Going Greek gives you a second family--people you can go to when you're homesick, stressed, happy, or proud. I'm thankful that I have over 100 different girls I can talk to when I need someone to be there for me, and each one of them would listen and be a support system.
3. You get to be a part of long-standing tradition.
Each Greek organization has their own traditions, rituals, and values they stand for. It's pretty cool to be a part of a national identity that holds its own unique traditions you get to become a part of and pass down each year.
4. There is always something to do.
Between social events, formals, philanthropies, and sisterhood events, there is almost always something to look forward to. From lip sync to your first formal, there are a lot of chances for you to participate in fun events with your organization.
5. You become part of a whole community.
Greek life is more than just your single sorority or fraternity; it's a community of people with a lot in common. All the chapters support each other, and you'll likely grow close with people in your organization as well as people in most other sororities and fraternities. When you attend other chapters' philanthropy events you will probably see at least 50 people you know from the Greek community.
6. You have the chance to take on leadership positions in your chapter.
Whether you could see yourself as chapter president in a few years or you just want to get involved in any way you can, there are endless opportunities to do so. Obtaining a position is a great way to grow closer to your chapter and make your organization the best it can be.
7. Greeks have a higher GPA than non-Greeks.
In spring 2015 the all Greek GPA was 3.32, and the all LMU GPA was 3.24. A lot of chapters focus on academic excellence and recognize members for high GPA honors. Being surrounded by other motivated students makes you want to do the best you can in school.
8. You will get to participate in incredible community service projects.
Each chapter puts on cool events to raise money for their national philanthropy. On top of donating a lot of money to philanthropies, many Greeks participate in local community service and alternative break trips.
9. You will make important networking connections.
A lot of current Greek students and Greek life alumni post internship and job opportunities for other students involved in their organization. Someone who you may have only known for a few months might be able to connect you with an amazing job opportunity, and the employer will trust you because they trusted your Greek brother or sister.
10. The friendships you make are lifelong.
After just one year of being a part of Greek life, I know the friendships I have formed with people in my chapter are so close that they will last far beyond college. I found people I have a lot in common with as well as people who have challenged me to try things outside my comfort zone. I have never had such close friendships in my life, and I value my relationship with everyone I've met through Greek life.
