10 Reasons My Mom Is the Best

Everyone says their mom is the best, but I mean it.

Everyone and their mom will claim that their mom is the best mom, and in turn, everyone else will roll their eyes.

In my humble opinion, I think my mom's the best. I know we're both probably biased though, so I won't try to convince you otherwise. Just know that she's really freaking great, and if you've never had the pleasure of meeting her, I'm sorry that you're missing out.

Meanwhile, I'm just going to throw out these reasons why my mom is so fantastic. Take them for what you will.

1. She's resilient as heck.

Life isn't a walk in the park for anyone. Everyone has their challenges, and everyone who's still here has survived them so far. I will say, though, that my mother has had to deal with a number of difficult obstacles, and through all of them, she's somehow managed to remain optimistic and, in the midst of her own struggles, support and uplift the people struggling around her, and I admire her for that. If that isn't resilience, I don't know what is.

2. She's kind.

When I'm out and about in my hometown and someone who knows my mom stops to have a conversation with me, it's almost a given that they're going to mention what a nice lady she is, and they're right. Growing up, my mom's always reminded me that people with negative attitudes aren't necessarily bad people, and that the best thing you could do for someone who is grumpy or short with you is to treat them with kindness. She practices what she preaches, and people take notice.

3. She does my laundry.

Maybe it's that my mother doesn't want to wait around for me to take my sweet time with my own laundry when she has everyone else's to do, but every time I intend to wash my own clothes, I somehow never need to finish the job. But hey, I'm not complaining! Thanks, Mom. You rock.

4. She makes the best soup.

I am thoroughly convinced that my mother is a descendant of soup-making royalty. Comfort food at its finest. I'll just leave it at that.

5. She restocks chocolate milk when I come home.

If you know me, you know that chocolate milk is my drink of choice. My mom knows me. If I'm coming home for a weekend, the fridge is locked and loaded, and all the chocolate milk is mine for the taking.

6. She has a wicked sense of humor.

My mom is one of the punniest people I know. Maybe her constant playing on words over the years has played a part in what shaping what is now an intense love of language for me. Beware: if you know her well, she might flash you a sample of her darker humor, but don't worry. It's always tasteful.

7. She has the best laugh.

Aside from humor, my mom's laugh deserves its own heading. More than likely, if she's laughing, it's at her own joke, and it's contagious. She is pretty funny, so I guess she's allowed to...

8. She gave birth to me.

I literally would not be here without you. Thanks for that, Ma.

9. She's my number one fan.

I'm one of those weird people who is trying to make careers out of both music and writing, and as crazy as that is to a large number of people, my mom's had my back since day one. I cannot express how grateful I am for her support.

10. She's superhuman.

My mom goes above and beyond for my brother and I around the clock, and I honestly have no idea how she does it. When does she sleep? How does she stay motivated to show up for work on a daily basis? How can she handle a million things at once and not spontaneously combust? Beats me. All I know is that I take it for granted way too often, but I appreciate it so much more than I could ever express.

I love you, Mom. You're truly the best.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
