For all of my life I have been a dog owner. I have had big dogs and little dogs, from German Shepherds to Yorkshire Terriers (I don't discriminate). Anyone who knows me knows that I am obsessed with my dogs. I often find myself running straight towards my friends' dogs whenever I pay them a visit and my favorite pastime is playing with puppies at the pet store. By growing up around them I have come to the realization that they are better than humans. Here are a few reasons why.
1. They listen to you.
If I ever need anyone to talk to, I know that my dog will allow me to talk for hours. Laying in bed petting my dog is way better than paying for a therapy session. Plus, their head tilting when you talk to them is one of their most adorable qualities.
2. They can't talk.
People have the tendency to gossip, talk back, or talk too much. Dogs are far too kind to participate in any of those activities. Although we did train my dog to say: "I love you." Who wouldn't think that is cute?
3. They make amazing cuddle buddies.
Your dog is a great cuddle buddy because he/she keeps you warm in the winter and will jump off of the bed if they are too hot in the summer (unlike humans, who will make you sweat all night).
4. They enjoy cleaning.
Have you ever noticed that dogs serve as living vacuums? I never have to worry about picking up crumbs after dinner. My dogs are always there to catch them when they fall.
5. They love you unconditionally.
No matter how much time passes, their affection for you will never fade. You never have to worry about them getting sick of you or leaving you. They have terrible short-term memories, so even if you get mad at them, they'll quickly forgive and forget.
6. They are the best thing to come home to.
There is no better feeling than coming home to your dog and seeing how happy they are to see you. When I was coming home from college my dogs were more excited to see me walk through the door than my parents were.
7. They will protect you.
My dog is my very own guardian angel on earth. No one is messing with me if my dog is around. My German Shepherds are huge teddy bears, but I'll admit that their barks are pretty intimidating.
8. They can sense emotions.
How many times have you wished that you could read someone's mind or be able to tell what they are feeling? My dogs can always sense when I am upset, or if I'm not feeling well, and they actually seem to make me feel better.
9. They are good for your health.
It is actually proven that having a pet relieves stress. Dogs are so smart. They can be trained to be service dogs in order to sense seizures, high blood pressure, and be eyes for the blind. What human can do those things?
10. They are your best friends.
Although I love my human friends, it's true that dogs are a man's (or woman's) best friend.
