10 Reasons Why College Is Like Kindergarten

In the past two years, I've noticed a pattern with my life at college. It's very similar to that of a kindergartner.

1. Making new friends.

In college, just as in kindergarten, you meet tons of people that you previously didn't know and form friendships.

2. Missing your parents.

When they drop you off, you don't want them to leave and you possibly cry. But eventually, you grow to love it and are excited to be there.

3. Nap time.

If you play your cards right and schedule your classes earlier in the day, you can have a power nap between classes and extra-curricular activities.

4. Snack time.

In college, you set a specific time to stop by the school's coffee shop for a quick snack. Also, you eat way too much candy and junk food when your parents aren't looking.

5. Not knowing what is going on half of the time.

Most of freshman year, I felt like I was totally lost and didn't know as much as others in my class. But, by the end of the year, I had finally gotten the hang of things.

6. Watching Disney Channel after school.

We're easily entertained and we like to watch television as a form of learning life lessons.

7. Not going to bed early.

Kindergartners hate going to bed early. College students have too much stuff going on. We also enjoy staying up late to watch Netflix, going on late night Walmart or fast food runs, or just to talking to our roommates.

8. Not caring what you look like.

Kindergartners have a style of their own. College students have our own style for three reasons: 1. We like to be comfortable. 2. As Johnny Cash would say, we put on our cleanest dirty shirt. 3. We wake up ten minutes before class and throw on whatever we have time for.

9. Being messy.

Kindergartners and college students alike hate cleaning. Our room looks messy, but to us, everything is in its place.

10. By the end of the first year, having the time of your life.

At the beginning, we have feelings of anxiety, fear, and a small bit of excitement. By the end, we are loving every minute of it. We have made so many new friends, we have learned so much, and we are in a fun, new, exciting place.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
