As much as I hate to admit it at times, I owe so much to my big sister. She helps me through hard times and she's always there when I need an extra laugh or someone to talk to. Big sisters deserve more appreciation for these and all of the amazing things they do ofr little sisters.
1.She was your trial run for everything.
Big sisters go through all of the stages of life first encountering some of the awkward and embarrassing phases so you don't have to. Trust your big sister when she assures you that your pink glasses and braces aren't a good look. She isn't trying to tear you down, she's just helping you avoid some of the bad style and fashion choices she regrets from her past.
2. She is there to help you know everything that is "in" right now.
Jelly bracelets, jeggings, Birkenstocks, your big sister let you know all about these cool trends that older girls were already wearing, so you could be the first of your friends to try it out. Also important, big sisters let you know when things aren't coolio anymore....like saying coolio.
3. She always has the best things to borrow....and never return.
So , maybe that black and tan striped shirt is her's. But I swear I have no clue how it got in my closet! Maybe it got mixed in with my laundry and maybe I went into her room and got it myself. I guess we'll never know.
4. She is the ultimate role model for you.
From the day you could walk, you've always wanted to be just like her. Luckily, big sisters rise to the task and blaze the way to becoming the perfect role model for younger sisters.
5. You can always go to her for life advice on absolutely everything!
Should you stop talking to that friend who keeps blowing you off anyway? Is Mindy Project really worth watching, even if you have to get a Hulu account for it? Is that dress actually cute, or should I return it? Big sisters have all of the answers to these and many of life's other important questions.
6. Because you have an older sister, your parents are easier on you.
Let's face it, she took most of the brunt of growing up. While she was accustomed to a strict 12:00 am curfew the summer after high school, you had some wiggle room with your 12:30 curfew. She wasn't allowed to get a cell phone until she was sixteen, but you got one in a shiny pink case for your thirteenth birthday. As much as you resented her getting to do all of the cool, older kid things before you, it does help that she eased your parents into it so they would be ready by the time you came around.
7. She understands the importance of being sister goals.
Big sisters understand the necessity of being cuter than every other sister duo. She understands when you need to redo pictures multiple times in order to get one Instagram or Snapchat story worthy so you can post it and all of your friends can be envious of how close the two of you are.
9. She is your go-to to help you get through family events.
When it comes to getting out of awkward conversations with elderly relatives you see are forced to see once a year, she knows just when to swoop in, let you tap out and recover. She also tag-teams dishes with you so you don't have to take the whole burden by yourself
10. She shares the best stories from your childhood.
Fortunately or not, she remembers all of the adorable and embarrassing stories from when you were growing up. The time you ate a dog treat in exchange for ice cream when she was babysitting, oh she remembers it and she'll make sure to tell any friends you ever bring home.
10. She loves you and you love her!
She'll be the first person to tell you when your eyeliner looks awful, but she'll also remind you how pretty you are and that you don't need it. Your big sister is your number one cheerleader at all of your games, your biggest support when you're going through tough times, and your go-to when you just need a night to stay home, watch movies and eat custard-style ice cream. Whenever you are in a sticky situation, your sister is always just a phone call away and willing to do whatever it takes to help you out. Together you can take on the world, or at least the rest of your family. Your big sister loves and cares for you and even through the ups and downs, you couldn't ask for a better best friend.
