With a big school comes a big reputation. Here's ten things you may have heard after telling someone where you study.
1. "That campus is huge! How do you find your way around?"
After stumbling around with a map for a couple weeks, it's a lot smaller than you think. Busses and friends with cars don't hurt, either.
2. "Where are you living? Southwest?"
There are 4 other residential areas, not including the North apartments and Greek life houses. While Southwest is pretty awesome with their high rises and the two best dining halls on campus, not all 28,000 of us live there.
3. "Is the food actually really good?"
Second in the country and proud of it!
4. "How do you deal with those giant lecture classes?!"
When you have several TA's and discussion classes, those 500 student lectures become much less intimidating.
5. "They have an awesome marching band!"
We might not be that great at sports, but that definitely doesn't stop the band from putting on a show at every game. With almost 400 members and countless awards, we're not at all afraid of showing our pride for our band!
6. "My friend/child/relative went there!"
UMass is unique in that it's so big, it has created a worldwide community. Chances are wherever you go, you'll probably run into an alumni or someone that knows an alumni.
7. "Their games are crazy!"
Again, we might not be great at sports, but that doesn't stop our students from thinking we are. With the enormous crowds comes major-league-quality experiences, complete with the most creative trash-talking around.
8. "Their library is HUGE!"
Often the icon of the campus, the Dubois Library is hard to miss. 26 floors, tutors, a writing center, silent floors, and even a cafe called "The Procrastination Station"...yeah, our library's pretty awesome.
9. "I went to the Mullins Center for -insert any kind of event-"
Political rallies, concerts, hockey games - you name it, it's been at the Mullins Center.
10. "ZOOMASS SLAMHERST! Do you even have time to study between parties?!"
Like every college, parties are a part of the experience. While we might get a little crazier than others, especially during the Superbowl or Blarney, our campus doesn't just consist of 24/7 partying - but it's not an empty rumor.
However, no matter the rumor or the reaction, we're proud to be Minutemen and shout "Go! Go U! Go U-Mass! Go UMass!" every chance we get.
