Lisa Cotter, a national speaker on the topics of dating, marriage, motherhood, and femininity, came to Murray State Saturday, Sept. 25 for one of her most relatable talks called "Why Do Woman Do That? Understanding the Joys and Pitfalls of Emotional Attraction."
While balancing sound theology with humor and practical insights, Cotter inspires people of all ages from everywhere in the U.S. She is a graduate of Benedictine College, where she earned degrees in Theology and Youth Ministry, and her work has been featured by Lighthouse Catholic Media, YDisciple, and The Chastity Project, according to Focus.org.
While Cotter's talk was sponsored by the Newman Center, a Catholic campus ministry on campus; I was sponsored by the Newman Center in January as well. The Newman Center helped fund my ticket to go to SEEK 2015, a five-day Catholic conference held in Nashville, Tennessee, in January 2015.
I've been a Cotter fangirl since 2014. SEEK isn't where I first fell in love with her, but it is where I got the opportunity to first hear her speak live. She is an inspiring and uplifting person that has helped me get out of personal struggles. Cotter is nothing less than a role model to me, so here are 10 of the best statements I've ever heard come out of her mouth:
1. "You are not ancient, you are eternal."
2. "People are not things, people are souls."
3. "The world needs you to be you. God made you for a reason. Who you are is enough."
4. "You don't need a man because you already have one. He seeks you and loves you and shows you your true beauty. A guy can never be your savior."
5. "Read the bible. They're His love letters to us."
6. "If you judge people, you have no time to love them."
7. "The person you're judging doesn't need anything besides your love. Be there for them."
8. "Your past made you who you are today, but that does not define who you are today."
9. "Don't fill the void by putting pressure on someone else who can't be your savior."
10. "A lifelong struggle is seeing people as eternal souls. Struggle is a part of life. Who would want to go to heaven if there was no struggle on earth?"
