10 Pros And Cons Of Summer Classes

Pro: You can do your work at the pace you wish. Most teachers open up assignments 3-7 days ahead of when they’re due, so you can potentially do all your work a week before the turn-in date.

Pro: Your teachers are much better at getting back to emails. Since everything is online, they’re better at having more of an online presence.

Pro: Generally, stuff is graded and in the gradebook quicker than usual. This is because assignments are turned in on folio, mymathlab, VHLCentral, etc., so the teacher is able to directly pull things off the internet already graded.

Pro: You can get folio updates with all the assignments. Yes, you can do this during the school year. However, in the summer, if your teacher uses folio, you get reminders for all of your assignments. This makes it much harder to forget to turn something in.

Pro: You don’t have to go to class and then still have hours of homework online. I hated when I had class three times a week and still proceeded to have seven hours of assignments left after I got back to my dorm.

Con: The pace of the class. Since it is a four-week class, if you mess up for one week, you basically have no time for redemption.

Con: Possible requirement of face-to-face contact times. I took Intermediate Spanish I and II online this summer and we had to have weekly contact times (Group FaceTimes basically) in order to practice face-to-face conversation. If you’re trying to avoid people, online foreign language will not allow you to do so.
Con: The amount of assignments. In Intermediate Spanish I, we legitimately had 50 assignments online per week along with the tests and quizzes. A pro to this, though, was you had a week to do everything.
Con: Keeping on top of your assignments. Sometimes teachers will randomly post assignments mid-week and you have to be sure to check daily, or a few times a day, in order to make sure you haven’t missed anything.

Con: You lose your precious summer. Although it really sucks that you have to concern yourself with school during your only break from it, it helps you get ahead and most classes don’t have assignments on the weekends, so you can still take short trips! Or if you take a trip and go to a hotel with Wi-Fi, it's still a good deal.

Overall, I did not hate summer classes as much as I thought I would! It also helps that they’re only four weeks long, so if you feel stressed, you can remind yourself “only one week left.” Hope this helped with your decision!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
