As college students, we live in a parallel universe where a good night's sleep is a precious, unexpected gift. With random all-night study sessions, hitting downtown four times a week, and irresistible Netflix binges, our sleep schedule is far from regular. Because of our newfound nocturnal lifestyle, naps are more important than they were in kindergarten. Without daily naps, being able to study and socialize effectively in college would be nearly impossible. Thus, the quest to discover an ideal secluded spot around campus to momentarily rest your head has never been more important.
1. The SLC
As you begin the ascent up the marble steps of the Zell Miller Learning Center, your mind is full of motivation and scholastic promise. You successfully secure a private study room which is, as we all know, no easy feat. As you open your laptop and take out your highlighters, you realize how quiet and secluded your little study room is. With no witnesses in immediate proximity, your eyes begin to droop and your head beings to sag and before you know it, sleep has swallowed you up in your very own study room cocoon.
2. Outside Boyd
On a warm, spring morning or a cool, fall afternoon, the six benches outside the Boyd Grad Research Center are the perfect place to catch some z's before having to endure the pain of stat, calc and the unbelievably challenging math modeling. By using your backpack as a pillow, the hard, plastic bench begins to feel like a plush cloud as you drift off to sleep.
3. Downtown
You are running on less than three hours of sleep, yet at this point in your college career, you are an expert at rallying. It is nearly midnight and you are starting to fantasize about the soft comfort of your bed. After successfully securing a chair, you low-key rest your head on the edge of the bar and dream of a time when eight hours of sleep was a taken for granted.
4. Downstairs Snelling
Buried deep beneath the hustle and bustle of omelette lines and salad bars, the “study lounge" located beneath the Snelling Dining Commons has been re-fashioned as a student sleeping quarters. Students can oftentimes be found engaging in hour-long naps with their bellies full of Snelling's finest pizza.
5. On the bus
Despite the loud noise and extreme claustrophobia that is experienced on a UGA transit bus, if lucky enough to secure a window seat, the potential for a quick 10 minute nap is limitless. When a 10 minute nap turns into an hour long snooze, you wake up dazed, confused and about 45 minutes late for class.
6. Myers Quad
If you are interested in a more eco-friendly place to slumber, the only thing you need is a sheet or blanket to prevent an itchy-grass problem. When the ground of the Myers Quad transforms into your very own Tempurpedic mattress, even the sound of ultimate Frisbee games will be unable to wake you.
7. Park Hall
The English building: full of dedicated scholars where the only noise you will hear is the scratch of a page turning in a Jane Austen classic or the clicking of keyboards as grad students type their first novel. In this realm of reading and writing, you can find full length leather couches tucked in the corners of each floor, presenting you with an ideal place to doze undisturbed.
8. The Library
It is difficult to get more peaceful than the library. In a place where talking loudly is the greatest offense one can make, sneaking in a quick nap every now then is hardly something to be frowned upon. After barricading yourself in a cozy cubby with encyclopedias, you will undoubtedly wake up refreshed with a lethargic smile on your face.
9. Class
In a lecture hall filled with 300 students, no one (especially your professor) will cast you, with your head resting awkwardly on your shoulder and drool dripping down onto your blank notebook pages, a second glance.
10. The flat-top stones outside the SLC
Still unsure if this place is socially acceptable, those who rest atop this perched position appear to be induced in a sleep-like coma where no matter the amount of passerbys who stop, stare, and take Snapchats, they remain unfazed by the world around them.
