10 Holiday Gifts For The English Major In Your Life

I'm an English major, and it's pretty great if I do say so myself. Not a lot of exams, I get to read some fantastic books, and aside from the occasional smart-ass making a "waitress-major" joke, it's a pleasant time all around. I know there's a lot of us English majors out there, and they're probably your friends and relatives, that would say the same thing! And now that the holidays have rolled around, it's time to show that book-loving nerd that you really care! So here's some tips to guide you in your goal of warming your beloved essay writing, Jane Eyre feels having, English major's heart.

1) From the Desk of Jane Austen: 100 Post Cards

Any person who's writing inclined appreciates the lost art of letter writing! These come with classic Jane Austen quotes like "I must learn to be content with being happier than I deserve" and "Nothing ever fatigues me, but doing what I do not like." Not to mention the illustrations are gorgeous! Give the English major in your life this cute present, and you might get something in the post back from them as a thank you!

2) Great Writers Finger Puppet Set

Who doesn't love finger puppets? Especially when they're your literary idols!!! Your loved one will really appreciate these when they're in the middle of their third 10-page literary analysis of finals week and need to blow off steam for five minutes. Can you just imagine the conversations one could make happen between these four?

3) Library Card Socks

If your giftee is anything like me, they're quite nostalgic for the days of their childhood when they would roam around the library, struggling to find just one book to check out, then watch the librarian magically sign the book off to them. The book card is no longer commonplace in our libraries, but we can bring that feeling back with these cozy socks! Not to mention, when you're spending long hours reading and writing, it's nice to keep those toes nice and warm.

4) Infinity Scarf with Alice in Wonderland Quote

http://www.amazon.com/Infinity-scarf-quote-Alice-W...

"We're all mad here!" As they get on in their college career, your English major friend will look around their department and relate more and more to that classic quote. But they embrace it, as should you! Remind this cutie that you embrace them for all their quirks, and don't mind that they spout literary theory 24/7, or spend the entire length of any movie you watch together muttering about how the book was better. And you want to keep them warm too, don't forget that.

5) CafePress "I Like Big Books and I Cannot Lie" Tote

http://www.amazon.com/CafePress-Like-Big-Books-Tot...

I am George Washington level of not being able to tell a lie. As C.S. Lewis famously said, you can never get a cup of tea large enough, or a book long enough to suit me." Speaking of...

6) Pipe Tea Infuser

http://www.amazon.com/Pipe-Tea-Infuser-by-Decodyne...

You know this English major harbors secret Sherlockian fantasies, and you are more than willing to be their Watson when it comes to fantastic gift giving! And nothing, absolutely nothing goes better with a good book than a nice cup of tea. It's the best of both worlds really.

7) AquaNotes Waterproof Notepad

http://www.amazon.com/Aqua-Notes-Waterproof-Notepa...

Do you ever have this moment in the shower when you come up with the most brilliant idea, decide on the perfect line, or figure out exactly the solution to your problems, only to forget the minute you're dry? Never again! Your giftee will be beyond grateful for this improvement to their life, and will soon be spouting shower-level brilliance!

8) Shakespearean Insult Bandages

http://www.amazon.com/Accoutrements-12389-Shakespe...

Talk about adding insult to injury. Here's the perfect solution to the avalanche of paper-cuts that come along with English major status! The Bard would be more than pleased to know his words are being put to use by those who appreciate him most.

9) First Lines of Literature Mug

http://www.amazon.com/First-Lines-of-Literature-Mu...

Us book lovers pour our heart and soul into these words, reading and re-reading, analyzing from cover to cover. It's always nice to look back to where it begins, and feel that excitement of starting over. When I read the first lines of my favorite books all over again, it's just like being drawn in for the first time. Give your beloved English major that same feeling, along with a kickass mug to put their tea in, which will aid them on their voyages through literary universes.

10) Moleskine Writing Set Gift Box

http://www.amazon.com/Moleskine-Gift-Box-Writing/d...

And finally, a gorgeous addition to any stationary collection...I for one know you could never have enough notebooks or pens. It's simply impossible. No matter how many composition books you think your friend has, trust me when I say they could always use one more.

So there you go! Snap any of these up, and enjoy the look on their beautiful, sleep-deprived face when you finally give it to them! And of course, if none of these work, a book is always nice too. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go drink some tea and hide in my room with whatever is next on my Goodreads list.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
