1. "They monogram everything that moves."
I hate to burst your bubble, but not every sorority girl monograms everything that they can touch. This is not an epidemic, nor is it the end-all-be-all fashion statement in a sorority girl's life. Of course, there are people that monogram every item of their wardrobe as well as desk, car, and all electronics. However, there are many of us girls left that can memorize our initials without having to be reminded of it in every inch of our lives.
2. "All they do is party ... every. single. night."
Call me crazy, but last time I checked, when you're in a sorority, that also entails you being a student at a college or university. Hence, you would not have the possible time to go out every single night and be a functioning student. Week night socials and parties are a thing, no doubt, but sorority girls must pick and choose when they are able to go out and have some fun.
3. "They must all be rich girls."
Every house is diverse, so there will be a few "rich girls" in every chapter, but there will also be girls that are on the true college budget. Personally, I can promise you that not all sorority girls are very wealthy.
4. "They buy their friends."
I can promise you that nobody is "bought" in a sorority. Just like any other situation in life, you must actually use your personality, your charm, and your wit to win over people and make them want to be your friend. Being a part of a sisterhood naturally helps you approach other people much easier than many social situations outside of sorority life. But you still need to build your friendships based on your own actions and efforts.
5. "All of them are obsessed with crafting."
NEWS FLASH — to craft, you must have basic artistic skills. I'll let you in on a little secret: many girls in sororities are able to find the few sisters in the chapter that have great crafting abilities (and the patience for it) and we pay them to help out. Crafting is truly a struggle for many and is not enjoyed by everyone.
6. "They think they run the school."
Most colleges are huge, with thousands of students. Greek life is a portion of the students, but usually not the majority. Other than the fact that Panhellenic women pride themselves on being extremely involved on campus, we do not believe we run the school. Get real; if we did run the school, we wouldn't have to follow so many rules, so there's that.
7. "They all wear oversized t-shirts and their letters every day."
I do agree with this one, but I'd like to defend it. First of all, if you look at a sorority girl's pictures, most of them are in regular clothes, not only t-shirts showing their letters. Many girls go overboard with the "oversized" part, but, during school, at the gym, or any time that doesn't require looking presentable, oversized t-shirts are so comfortable. Also, we all are proud to be members of our individual chapters and the events we're involved in, so why not be okay with us sporting our letters?
8. "Sorority girls aren't very bright."
On many campuses, sororities are home to the highest overall GPA's out of all organizations on campus. Academics are very serious in Greek life and there are penalties for not performing well in school. Not to mention, many of the nation's most successful women were members of sororities, such as Katie Couric, Condoleeza Rice, and Laura Bush. Also, fraternity and sorority members head up 43 of the 50 nation’s biggest corporations.
9. "To be in a sorority, you have to be a girly-girl."
Like mentioned before, sorority houses are extremely diverse and no two are the same. Hollywood's image of the sorority girl has given us this stereotypical reputation. I am not a girly girl, and neither are many of my sisters. Many girls in every house are athletic, tough, and would refuse to wear pink from head to toe. Rush may require members to emphasize their girly side, but overall, many of us aren't extremely girly.
10. "They quote 'Mean Girls' in every situation possible."
Wait, we actually do this ... but then again, why wouldn't we? It's totally fetch.
