This is it. You've arrived. It's the end of the school year, all tests and schoolwork are complete and you've never felt more alive. I think it's time to celebrate with some films that really speak to us students after being mentally abused by last minute schoolwork.
1. The Great Gastby
Even though I'm not too fond of director Baz Luhrmann's films, The Great Gatsby is a movie that I think is worth checking out. Much like Jay Gatsby, we students after finals try to search for something meaningful. Even though there may be severe consequences, Gatsby shows us that a certain something is worth fighting for.
2. Olympus Has Fallen
During finals, everything is falling apart, especially our sanity. It looks like it's all hopeless and we'll never recover from the devastating trauma that finals has caused us. That is until Gerard Butler steps in and shows us that when the chips are down and all hope is lost, someone needs to step up and show everyone that it's never hopeless. If we stay strong, we'll come out on top, and maybe even become a symbol of hope for others.
3. Spider-Man 1 & 2 (Sam Raimi)
I decided to put these two together seeing as they're from the same trilogy. It just seems pointless to separate them. No, I'm not just putting these two here just because the third one was a disappointment. Both of these movies show us what it means to do the right thing. I'm not going to put that overused quote here because I'm pretty sure everyone knows it by this point. Spider-Man 1 shows us what it means to step up and do the right thing, and that's exactly what we did by studying until we couldn't feel our brain cells. Spider-Man 2 shows us that during rough times, when it seems like giving up is the easy thing to do, we need to get back on our feet and conquer that final exam and our anxiety before it conquers us.
4. The Dark Knight Rises
Bruce Wayne seems to go through the same steps as a student finishing up the school year. We've given up, we don't have the motivation to do anything anymore. Then something appears that forces us to prepare for that something. In his case it's Bane, in ours it's a final exam. We think we can handle it but we suddenly realize that it's out of our league. We feel broken, we think to ourselves it's hopeless, there's no way we can do it. When that test gets closer and closer, we feel more motivated to prepare for it. Study like we've never studied before. Then, just like that, it's the day of the test, we can hear the exam saying, "So, you've come back to die with your grade." That's when we say, "No. I came back to finish you."
5. Inception
Much like TDKR where students go through Wayne's predicament, we go through DiCaprio's as well. But not until the test is over. Once we've handed in the test, it's over. Our mission is complete. It's almost as if we've awoken from a bad dream. But is it a dream? Is it real? Did we really finish the test? How do we know what is real and what is a dream? Maybe we've constructed a paradise where we live in a post-test world and now we can't tell the difference between dream and reality... Nahhhh we're good.
6. Avengers: Age of Ultron
After the test, you feel like you've been mentally abused, like we need a place to recuperate after everything we've been through. You may take longer than others to be brought back down to earth. Once you're OK, you can stick it to those who did this to you. You don't care about those who did this once you're finished with them, because there are no string on you.
7. Mad Max: Fury Road
Much like Max, we students are the trying to the best of our ability to survive a harsh, warm desert where it feels like everyone is out to get us; mainly those who are in charge of things. You try to escape those in charge, but it never seems like you can. When you get to where you need to be, that being the final exam, you feel like you just need to drop to your knees and scream. Then you're out of the test. Even though you've been through a lot, it was all worth it. You feel as though you were living, then you died, but then you lived again. Once you've completed the test you feel as though you've grabbed the sun and are riding to Valhalla. What a day, what a lovely day. But we still travel other parts of the wasteland in search of our better selves.
8. The Pursuit of Happyness
I think this one speaks for itself.
9. American Beauty
In this film, Kevin Spacey plays a husband and father going through the infamous midlife crisis, which is what studying for a final exam certainly feels like. We feel like we need to do so much on our own in so little time. We also have that feeling of just doing whatever, not wanting to study or do anything resembling work. However, once the hard part is over and the test is completed, we realize that there's so much beauty in the world.
10. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens
I think The Star Wars Saga as a whole is a representation of us students. Like the original trilogy, we start the school year out fine, pretty well actually. That is until we go through a rough patch as the year comes to a close and we're not sure how we're going to get through this, like the prequels. Suddenly, after that last final exam, we realize that everything is going to be alright, just like The Force Awakens.
Because let me tell you something folks, the summer is here, school is out, and we're FREE!!!
