10 Movies to Fit Your Mood

1. Something that makes you keep laughing even after it is finished.

If you're anything like me when it comes to comedies, it has to be a certain sense of humor. And if that's the case, "We're the Millers" is the comedy for you. I watched with my parents (who are in their mid- to late-50's) and there were many times we had to pause the movie because we were laughing our you-know-whats off and needed to catch our breaths again.

Synopsis: "A veteran pot dealer creates a fake family as part of his plan to move a huge shipment of marijuana into the U.S. from Mexico," as written in We're the Millers, IMDb.

Grade: B+

2. Something thought-provoking.

I didn't get around to watching "Interstellar" until recently, and let me tell you, it definitely lives up to the amazing reviews. This movie, with amazing acting performances by Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, will have you on the edge of your seat throughout and thinking, "OMG. WHAT IS EVEN HAPPENING?!" Afterwards, all you'll be is mind-blown and thinking, "What even is life, right now?"

Synopsis: "A team of explorers travel through a wormhole in space in an attempt to ensure humanity's survival," as written in Interstellar, IMDb.

Grade: A

3. Something lovey-dovey.

Going old school for the romance film with "When Harry Met Sally" because this movie is not a romantic cliché nor is it full of them. What I love most about this movie is that Director Rob Reiner and Writer Nora Ephorn and lead actor and actress Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, respectively, created the practically perfect combination of sappiness and realistic elements. This movie poses the age-old question: can men and women be friends even after crossing that infamous line? (LOL, NO.) (JUST LOOK AT THE WAY HE IS LOOKING AT HER. Sigh.)

Synopsis: "Harry and Sally have known each other for years, and are very good friends, but they fear sex would ruin the friendship," as written in "When Harry Met Sally," IMDb.

Grade: A

4. Something to make you afraid to sleep.

I really didn't want to include this one, but then it wouldn't have felt complete without a horror movie. Since Melissa (yes, I refer to myself in the thirrd person) does NOT like horror movies, she posed the question for the YikYak-ers of UNI and let them decide. "The Conjuring" took the prize. If you think you have a better/scarier horror movie, leave a comment with the title and why. (For others' benefit, not mine.)

Synopsis: "Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse," as written in The Conjuring, IMDb.

Grade: +11 up-votes from UNI yak-pack

5. Something action-packed.

Growing up in a house when my dad or my older brother controlled the remote, I can tell you that I have seen many many (MANY) action movies in my (almost) 20 years of life. You name it; it is extremely likely I have seen it. "Marvel's Avengers" won me over in all aspects an action movie can win over a person. Packed with A-list actors from Robert Downey Jr. to Chris Hemsworth to Samuel L. Jackson, this movie is an entrée of action with hors d'oeuvres (or side orders, for us non-French speaking) science-fiction, humor, and hot men and women fighting to save Earth.

Synopsis: "Earth's mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity," as written in The Avengers, IMDb.

Grade: A-

6. Something Disney.

*wipes sweat off eyebrows* This one is probably the most challenging one to pick. (Please don't start plans to kill me if you don't agree with me.) For me, it is and forever will be "The Lion King," but before you get your swords and pitchforks ready for attack (which you shouldn't have in your dorm room, to begin with...), at least let me explain myself. Disney is famous for movies with lessons as their main theme and using dark (for the target audience of small children) tragedies to get those lessons across. "The Lion King" is no different: watching your father be killed in front of you and being lead to believe it was your fault is mind-blowingly tragic. But the lesson we learn from this movie is to keep looking forward and only look back to the past to learn from it.

Synopsis: "Lion cub and future king Simba searches for his identity. His eagerness to please others and penchant for testing his boundaries sometimes gets him into trouble," as written in The Lion King, IMDb.

Grade: A

7. Something to make your history teachers smile.

Stay with me on this one. I mean historic in the sense of war movies and movies like "Schindler's List". While that was a great and memorable film, there is little competition (honorable mention goes to "War Horse") that can go up against "Saving Private Ryan." If you haven't seen this movie yet, I highly suggest it. Not only is it fairly close in the accuracy of events but also in the phenomenal acting performances given by Tom Hanks and Matt Damon that makes this a film to put on your "before I die" movie watch list.

Synopsis: "Following the Normandy Landings, a group of U.S. soldiers go behind enemy lines to retrieve a paratrooper whose brothers have been killed in action," as written in Saving Private Ryan, IMDb.

Grade: A

8. Something with a flair of drama.

For some, people tend to avoid these movies. Personally, I didn't really realize I was a fan of these movies, but sometimes we all have those moments we have a flair for the dramatic (don't deny it, people who loved HSM). My recommendation for this one is "The Judge," starring Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall. I recently watched this movie for the second time and I loved it just as much (if not more!). One of the many reasons why is because we get to see RDJ in a more serious or dramatic role, but fear not RDJ fans, he has his trademark sarcastic and sassy comments.

Synopsis: "Big-city lawyer Hank Palmer returns to his childhood home where his father, the town's judge, is suspected of murder. Hank sets out to discover the truth and, along the way, reconnects with his estranged family," as written in The Judge, IMDb.

Grade: A-

9. Something you (probably) won't fall asleep to.

Not to be confused with horror, thrillers hold their own in the movie industry and do quite well. This category is for the people who are not the biggest fan of straight-up horror movies but still like a little suspense (LIKE ME) to keep them interested. "Prisoners," starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, would be the movie for you. I remember having to drive home (ALONE) in the dark after seeing this movie. While the movie itself isn't based a on true story, this movie reminded me when Lyric and Elizabeth Cook disappeared a couple of years ago (may they rest in peace).

Synopsis: "When Keller Dover's daughter and her friend go missing, he takes matters into his own hands as the police pursue multiple leads and the pressure mounts. But just how far will this desperate father go to protect his family," as written in Prisoners, IMDb.

Grade: B+

10. Something to get you into the mood for PANTHER FOOTBALL 2K15.

Not only was I forced to watched action movies, I have been exposed to sports films hanging around my brother and dad. In honor of Panther football season creeping upon us, I figured it would make sense to me to end with a football film. Many come to mind but only two really stand out to me: "The Blind Side" and "Remember the Titans." This is a hard choice for me, but I'm going to go with my gut with this one. "Remember the Titans" is the type of movie that avid football fans and non-sports people have watched because of the memorable acting performances given by Denzel Washington and young Hayden Panettiere (and RYAN GOSLING, LADIES) and iconic scenes movie buffs constantly reminisce about.

Synopsis: "The true story of a newly appointed African-American coach and his high school team on their first season as a racially integrated unit," as written in Remember the Titans, IMDb.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
