Grey's Anatomy is by far the most addicting show that I have ever binge watched on Netflix. Over the span of two semesters, my roommate and I have watched all twelve seasons of this surgical soap opera. Nothing creates a stronger bond between two roommates than sobbing together every time the plot takes a dark and twisty turn, or screaming and throwing various objects at the T.V. when a favorite character does something stupid yet again. Besides coming to believe that, after studying 269 episodes and learning all of the medical terminology, we are completely qualified to be surgeons, we've learned some valuable life lessons from this binge-worthy television show. Thanks Shonda!
1. You are more than your outside appearance
People often complement others on their physical appearance, which is totally awesome. However, it is even more meaningful to complement someone on their fantastic personality or, in the case of Dr. Christina Yang, incredible brilliance.
2. Don't let someone else's wants come before your needs
Know your worth and don't be afraid to stick up for what you know you deserve. In relationships and friendships, it is sometimes easy to lose yourself. When you feel that start to happen, just realize: they aren't the sun, you are!
3. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger
Maybe that is why Meredith Grey is so strong. I've lost track of how many times she has almost died over the course of 12 seasons...
4. It's okay to not be okay
Despite how things may appear, no one is happy all the time. It is okay to feel angry, stressed or sad. These are all natural human emotions that shouldn't be hidden under a mask of fake happiness. Let it out.
5. Everyone makes mistakes
It is okay to mess up or fall short. Don't waste time beating yourself up about it. No one is perfect. Just learn from your mistakes and try harder next time.
6. Learn from your mistakes
... or don't, and learn them over and over and over again.
7. Take a chance
Don't be afraid to try something new. All you can do is go out on a limb and hope that it pays off. You will always regret the things you didn't do because nothing is worse than missing an opportunity that could have changed your life.
8. Let your loved ones know that you love them
You can never say "I love you" too much. Say it loud and say it proud. Don't wait until it's too late. So what if you're scared? The risk is so worth the reward. Well, what are you waiting for? Go!
9. Don't play the victim card
If you don't like a situation you are in, then do something about it. Forgive and forget. Don't let other people get you down because there comes a point when you have to stop whining and start living!
10. Dance it out
Sad because you're fighting with your significant other? Stressed about exams or finding a summer internship? Whether you're feeling down because your best friend is leaving you to work at the Mayo Clinic or stressing over school, a 30 second dance party can cure almost any ill. Get moving and release those endorphins!
