I was a member of my drama club all four years of high school. I wasn’t always casted but I stayed with it. I did whatever was needed at the time because I loved it. I loved being a part of something bigger than me. I loved when people complimented the costumes that were on stage. I loved being on stage. The drama club was my whole life in high school. Drama Club and the people taught me really important life lessons.
1. Everyone is important
No matter what part of drama club you were involved in, you were important. If you were the lead or the person that helps with quick changes you were important and needed. It doesn’t matter what role or job you have, you should know you are key.
2. Be Humble
Being humble is so important in life. It is so easy to brag especially when you get the lead but it shows class to simply say “Thank you”
3. Appreciate others
Appreciate anything you are given because odds are someone else wanted it. You need to appreciate when the club moms do your make up and take their time to help, appreciate your director for wanting to make you better; appreciate life.
4. Make a choice
Make a choice and stay with it. Once you make an acting choice you have to go with it. You can’t doubt yourself once it happens.
5. Work for it
Work hard for everything you do. To get the role, you need to work hard and put your everything into it.
6. Be happy for others
You should be happy for others. I learned the best thing is to do when someone gets the role you wanted is to be happy for them; just smile and say congrats.
7. How to eat in under 10 minutes
I learned how to eat a burrito in two minutes and still had time to spare. If I had to be on stage in 10 minutes, I still had time for some guacamole and chips.
8. Fake till you make it
I was the worst dancer and singer in high school, but that didn’t matter to me. I still smiled the widest and acted my way through the scene. Usually, if my facial reactions were on point no one noticed if I messed up.
9. To Believe in yourself
You have to believe in yourself to make in theater. I learned that to get a role I had to think I was perfect for it; I couldn’t doubt myself. If you can go up on stage in front of your whole school as a lion, you can do anything. Confidence is key.
10. Friends are important
My friends that I made in drama club made my high school experience. Sometimes my friends were the best part of rehearsal; they were my rocks when I had a break down. You spend hours and hours together; it’s hard not to make a best friend.
I loved drama club. I learned so much from my experience and my directors in drama club. I learned how to be an adult from my experiences in theater. I learned how to be organized, to relax in stressful situations and so many other important things. I know that the lessons I learned from drama club will stay with me for the rest of my life.
