A few weeks ago, I told my college professor that I needed to ask for my dad’s opinion before I selected my topic for the next essay. He looked at me in disbelief that I wanted to know my dad’s opinion, but my dad knows me better than anyone. He knows what to say to make me smile, or how to push me enough to believe in myself. He has taught me a lot of lessons in my life. Lessons that will continue to be with me, and hopefully I will pass them onto my children too.
1. Never sell yourself short.
My dad always knows the potential I have, but I have never been able to see it in myself. He always builds me up, because he knows how much I have to offer.
2. Believe in yourself.
This was a big lesson my dad said to me on the softball field. All I had to do was let go and have faith. Never doubt yourself.
3. Music can cure any problem.
Music has been a big part of my life thanks to both my parents. There were many different varieties of music to any mood one is feeling. Music was a way to share your feelings and work through any problem.
4. It's okay to still be a kid at heart.
My family is full of goofs and pranksters that it seems no one is grown up. Jokes and sarcasm have become a habit of mine due to my dad's mindset of always having fun with everything you do.
5. No response is often the best response.
I'm still getting the hang of this lesson. I think all my feelings and thoughts need to be shared. My dad still tells me that people only want a rise out of you, and the best thing for you to do is to not give them one.
6. It's okay to not be a people person, but still treat people kindly and respectfully.
Never give people a reason to talk poorly of you. Always talk to people kindly.
7. Always give 100 percent.
My dad always pushes me to do my best. He said as long as you do your best then that is all you can do.
8. Don't ever let others make you feel worthless.
He has told me many times to never let others affect your mood. Never let others bring you down.
9. Sometimes it's best to unplug and read a good book.
From a young age, my parents, sisters, and various family members read. My dad especially reads whether just sitting in bed or near a pool on vacation. He seemed to always have some new
10. Always believe and work hard at your dreams.
My dad is a big reason why I am pursuing my dreams. He tells me to follow my heart, and never give up on the things you truly want in life.
I wouldn't be the person I am today without my dad. He has inspired me to try my hardest, and push myself past limits. He has taught me to hold my head high, and never listen to others negative comment. We can't choose our parents, but I got extremely lucky with mine.
