Going away to college can be intimidating. Though this is one of the most exciting times of a person's life, the fear of the unknown can be a scary. Once in college, you learn things about yourself, about life and about college very quickly. You also have time to reflect on the past and about things you wished you had known prior to starting college which would have made starting college less stressful.
1.Command Strips are life.
Command strips are magical items that are vital to college life. You can use these items for almost anything, and they can hold the weight of most anything. You can even use command strips as a substitute for glue on occasion, seeing as these objects are extremely strong and durable.
2. Your freshman year roommate may not end up being your best friend.
It is nice to have a roommate, especially at the beginning of your freshman year when you do not know anybody, but this person does not have to be your best buddy. People grow and change, and you may end up meeting other people that you get along with better, and that is perfectly normal.
3. Almost everybody changes their major at least once.
It is perfectly normal to change majors. Almost all college students change majors at least once. When you arrive at college and start taking classes, you may find classes that are more interesting than the classes that pertain to your major. If those classes and that major seem interesting to you, then don’t be afraid to change. You will be happier in the long run.
4. Nobody has any idea what they are doing either.
If you are feeling like everybody around you has their life together, has a clear plan about the future and that you are the only one that does not have any idea about what you want to do in twenty years, let along tomorrow, then know that you aren’t alone. In reality, very few people actually know what they are doing. Most people have a general idea about the future, but it is rarely set in stone.
5. Get involved on campus.
It is important to get involved on campus. You will meet new people outside of your major, and broaden your horizons. Also, being involved in multiply activities will look good on a resume.
6. You will get sick.
Unfortunately, getting sick is inevitable and it is absolutely terrifying when you get sick for the first time. Do not think that you are all alone when you get sick. The university's health center is accustomed to taking care of sick students. Also, call your parents, they will want to help you.
7. You will make friends.
When you first start college, it may seem overwhelming, intimidating and it may feel like you will never make friends. Don’t give up if the first people you meet don't turn out to be friends, you will make friends, and good friends.
8. Don’t forget to take care of yourself.
Self-care is important. Don’t forget to take time for yourself and your needs, otherwise you will get sick.
9. Get creative with food.
College cafeterias do not always serve the best tasting food. You may have to become creative with the food to make it more appetizing. You might have to make a salad bowl or mix different types of food together. Also, look around, sometimes there are more options than you think, you will just have to search for these options.
10. Have fun
College can be a stressful time what with being away from home, challenging academics and trying to learn how to be an adult. Do something that makes you happy and that is fun. Having fun is sometimes forgotten in the tornado of classes, exams, and life. However, having fun is one of the most important aspects of college, don’t forget about it.
