If you happen to be going into your freshman year of college, there's some things that you may not have thought of, but could make your life a little bit easier. I'm no expert, but these college "hacks" could make things better.
1. Get a hamper that folds up, and has handles
Hauling a week's worth of laundry up and down multiple flights of stairs can be a hassle. But if you've got one that folds up to slide under your bed to save space, and has handles to drag up the tedious stairs, washing your clothes will be a breeze.
2. A reusable water bottle
Not paying for soda and saving campus meal plan is awesome. Also, it's eco-friendly and keeps you from drinking unnecessary calories. You also might want one that's a bit insulated so that you can keep cool for a bit longer on those hot fall days.
3. Put your clothes on a hanger, then wrap them in garbage bags
This is a weird idea, but clothes should be the last thing to worry about on move-in day. This way, you just take all of your clothes and hang them up in less than 5 minutes, instead of spending at least an hour hanging up clothes when you could be decorating or making friends. Save some time and wrap your closet clothes!
4. Book the hotel you or your parents are staying at, as soon as possible
Move in weekend has thousands of people doing the exact same thing on the exact same day. Make sure you're not driving more than 10 minutes from the hotel to the campus. Taking 30 or more minutes to and from the hotel to your campus is a hassle, so make sure you don't have to do that. This also goes for Parent's Weekend or big events at your school. Be prepared.
5. Don't buy your textbooks too early
Professors have a tendency to change what books you actually need at any minute, which means you've just wasted your hard earned money, only to sell it again at a fraction of what you paid for it. A professor could also say that you don't need the textbook at all, and that it's just a formality that they have to put on the website. (Yes, this does happen, it happened to me). So I would wait until at least the first week. Then order them on Amazon Prime or another quick-shipping website.
6. Little snacks/meals
When you're running late for an 8:30 A.M. class, what you really need is something quick to grab to eat on the way there, or to open quietly in class. Yogurts are a great morning meal, as the protein can keep your stomach from making whale noises and the carbs can help you stay awake. Also, investing in some granola or nutrition bars to keep in your backpack for an on-the-go snack or something to munch on in the library is a great idea as well.
7. Stock up on any medication you might need
Figuring out how to get your medications to your college may be difficult, especially if your university doesn't have your pharmacy close by or you have to wait a few weeks for them to have it in stock. Make you and your doctor's lives easier by ordering enough to last you until you at least come home for the holidays.
8. Get an id card holder
Having one of those mini pockets for your phone or something to hang off your key chain makes getting in and out of dorm rooms a breeze, and paying for things easier than reaching into your bag for your wallet each time. It also may keep you from losing it!
9. Get a heavy-duty rain coat
Walking is a main source of transportation on a college campus, and you may have to walk through a tsunami-like surge of water. Make sure you don't arrive to class soaked in rain water, and invest in a rain coat.
10. You NEED a tool box
You or the people down the hall will need a screwdriver sooner or later! You don't need to be Bob The Builder, but a few handy items can make something broken, into something fixable.
These things are just a few things that you can do to make college something that's do-able and not scary. You're going to love your freshman year, so enjoy it without the hassle of being unprepared!
