Do you have these awesome apps? Better make room in your phone for these. You are going to want them!
1. Venmo. Easily one of my favorite apps that I hope will catch on, down here in Alabama. It is a mobile payment app that
allows you to link your credit card and bank account and send money to your
friends for free. No longer do you have to feel awkward asking for your change
back for your friend or have to deal with cash and credit card awkwardness when
settling bills or bar tabs.
2. Pocket. Ever see an article on Twitter or Facebook that you want to read, or a website to check out later? Use Pocket, which saves all of your articles that you can access later. You can pull it up and read it in an easier to read format within the app or go to the original article. I also love using this app for papers, as you can use different tags to sort them out.
3. Afterlight. I have tried out a lot of photo
editing apps, but have only stuck with Afterlight. It costs $0.99, but it is
well worth the dollar. My big (@hillheady) runs our sorority’s Instagram, as
well as hosts an impressive personal account, and told me this is the only app
that she will ever need or use to edit her photos.
4. Poshmark. A great alternative to eBay, this is
an app-only way to sell your old clothes and shoes. Simply snap a picture of
the item you want to sell, edit it with their Instagram-esque filters and post
it. It takes all of 10 seconds, and it’s a great way to sell your clothes
without a lot of hassle.
5. My Greek Study/ Blackboard. This is the easiest
way to track your study hours at the house or the library, and it makes our
education department’s life a lot easier.
Blackboard is another way to easily stay on top of your assignments and
grades, especially when you need to double check something on the way to class.
6. Alabama App. When I asked my friends about whether they had downloaded this or not, I was surprised to find out that a lot of them had no idea about it. It is one of the most useful apps to use. From refilling your act card, transferring your football ticket, or checking what bus is on the way, it does a lot more than one would assume.
7. Find My Friends. Last year, my friends and I
downloaded this as a joke to keep track of each other on Friday and Saturday
nights, but it has really become invaluable as we all moved out of Tutwiler and
into our own apartments. Combined with the ios8 update, you can now send your
friends a screenshot with a pin of where you are through iMessage.
8. Red Cup. One of the best apps for going out on the weekends, Red Cup takes all the specials of bars on the strip and downtown and puts them in an app, as well as keeps an up to date record of any bar’s cover that night, especially handy for bars whose cover increases as the night goes on. It also uses an algorithm to analyze the best drink specials for that evening.
9. Quizlet/Studyblue. I am a Quizlet fiend, and will
make a set for just about anything I need memorized. Studyblue works just as
well and allows you to add photos to your flashcards for free, whereas Quizlet
you have to pay for. Having this on your phone allows for easy, last minute
studying heading into an exam or walking to class.
10. Google Drive. The whole Google Drive suite is invaluable to college students in general, but the drive app is a lifesaver to share documents, spreadsheets, and slideshows quickly and to pull up shared files.
