For All The Women Who Don't Want To Be Something "Slutty" For Halloween

10 Feminist Halloween Costumes

For Halloween there are always girls dressed up in costumes that have the preface of "slutty." Slutty cat, slutty mime, slutty *insert any super hero*, slutty *insert any cartoon character*.. you get my point. But what about the girls who don't want to be a slutty anything?

My freshman year of college I dressed up as a slutty mini mouse one night and Daisy Duke the next because at the time I didn't know there was any other socially acceptable costumes for women in their 20s on Halloween. So this year I decided to look at all my options. Here is a list of the 10 best Feminist Halloween costumes (not in any particular order):

1. A Suffragette

What better way to show your feminist spirit than with the ultimate costume for women's rights. The Suffragette's were the women who fought for our right to vote after all. If you wear this costume wear it proud and show everyone just how much fun a feminist can be.

2. Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen is a shining beacon for strong women and she is also incredibly successful. Who wouldn't want to be her for Halloween?

3. Rosie the Riveter

This one may seem like a no brainer. Rosie the Riveter embodies the strength of millions of women that pulled together during war time to work in factories. Rosie is an iconic figure that stands for the strength of all women and their contributions to our country during one of biggest wars in history.

4. Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo, a Mexican painter who is best known for her self portraits, is a woman who shows the strength and struggles that women have endured for many centuries. She is also a shining figure among Mexican art and culture.

5. Queen Amidala

From the number one movie franchise of all time Queen Amidala is one of the most iconic and loved characters ever. She puts the needs of her people first and shows how women can be successful in politics and making the right decisions for her country.

6. Hermione

Hermione is also one of the biggest names in Hollywood but also in print. And not to mention Emma Watson is a leading figure among feminists who is actively trying to change the world. Hermione taught girls everywhere that they can be a warrior and fight for what they believe in.

7. Hilary Clinton

Can't leave Hilary out of this list. Hilary Clinton is running for President and even if she does not win she is still breaking down barriers for women. Hilary Clinton, as a woman, is the minority in politics. She stands for all the success women should strive for.

8. Amelia Earhart

Who better to be for Halloween than the first women who fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She pioneered the field of aviation for women and also set many records in her field. She disappeared over the Pacific Ocean so what better way to bring her memory back than by being her for Halloween.

9. Maleficent

Angelina Jolie gave Maleficent a whole new prevalence in our culture and the end of the movie is the best part. Maleficent saves Sleeping Beauty, showing that women do not need a man to be saved; women can save each other!

10. Last but not least-- A Vagina

I couldn't leave this one out. If you are a brave soul, this is the one for you. How else better to show your feminism than by be the being the one thing that makes us female. The root of out strength... the vagina.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
