Are you and your significant other looking for something to watch together either sitting on the couch together or skyping long-distance? Well, here are some suggestions for you to take advantage of!
"The Princess Bride"
This movie is definitely a classic. Buttercup and Westley go through challenges with their many comrades to defeat an evil plan set to tear them apart and start a war. It is one of the most quotable movies of all time. As the grandfather says in the film, this movie is filled with “Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles…” and a true love story that will leave you wanting to cuddle for a while. The storyline is exciting and charming through time, and it has something for everyone.
"10 Things I Hate About You"
Another 90s classic, "10 Things I Hate About You" is a wonderful comedy based off of the Shakespeare play “The Taming of the Shrew.” As an elaborate hoax, the characters must find someone to date the “mean girl” in school so her sister will be allowed to go on a date as well. And of course, shenanigans ensue. It is funny and complicated, with Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Give it a watch!
"Moulin Rouge" (!!)
Not for the heavy-hearted, "Moulin Rouge!" is a musical is set in the club of the same name. A courtesan and poet fall in love, resulting in a dramatic hidden romance. The music has many roots in modern songs and with Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman at the reigns, you’ll be singing along in no time.
"Beauty and the Beast"
If you are looking for something more heavy-hearted, you can’t do better than "Beauty and the Beast". Most people know the tale of the man cursed into a beast and the woman who sets him free. Let your inner child free and see how many words you can still remember with your significant other!
"Safe Haven"
The storyline in this story is not typical of a Nicholas Sparks movie: the protagonist is attempting to escape her ex-husband and start a new, safe life. Seriously, it’s worth a watch.
"The Avengers"
If you’re looking for something with non-stop action and a movie that never stops giving, why not give "The Avengers" a try? It’s not only superheroes fighting to save New York; the characters must battle with themselves as well.
"The Fifth Element"
This sci-fi film appeals to many audiences just as much as it did when it was first released. The romance in this movie is interspersed with a challenge to save the world. And one of the secret gems of this film is Chris Tucker; I mean look at him:
Just get watching already!
"Speed"
The plot of this movie is relatively simplistic; the bad guy places a bomb on a bus, stopping it from going a certain speed (see what they did there?) or else it will explode. Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock play our heroes when she must take the wheel and keep them alive. It is a captivating movie with impressive acting chops from everyone involved. It is worth the watch!
"The Mummy"
One of my personal favorites, "The Mummy" is a movie that is endlessly entertaining. Even the minor characters have interesting backstories. The humor is never cheapened (surprisingly for a movie where they must stop a killer mummy) and there is plenty. The camera angles and chemistry between the two main characters keeps you wanting more (and luckily, there is a sequel that is just as exciting!). And lastly, Rachel Weisz’s character is simply lovely and intelligent and is everything I love seeing in a female character.
"The Conjuring"
If you and your significant other want something on the scarier side, "The Conjuring" is the movie for you. It is based off of the true tellings of Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators, and their experience living in a house once occupied by a witch. The film itself is deeply unsettling and has enough scares in it to keep you both entertained.
I hope this list gets things started, and even if you've seen these movies before, they are all worth a second (or even third) watch!
