With first semester coming to an end and students heading home for winter break, here are a few things we are all looking forward to.
1. Home Cooked Meals.
Let’s be honest, in college this is the biggest reason we want to come home. Nothing beats a home cooked meal, once you’ve been to the cafeteria for months straight. Something just isn’t appetizing about the mystery meat anymore and you long for your mom’s meals again. If you’re anything like me, you may even begin drooling thinking about it.
2. A Dishwasher.
This isn’t one we normally think of until we have to wash dishes, but we didn’t even like putting dishes in the dishwasher in high school. Now we are stuck hand washing all of them in our dorm. Suddenly, going home and sticking bowls in a washer is a lot more appealing.
3. Free Laundry
The longer I live in college the more I appreciate my mom and her weekly laundry habits. Not only was she willing to do mine, but it was free of cost. In college, not only do you have to do your own, but you have to pay, which just dwindles your bank account more and more.
4. Your Own Shower.
Ugh. The epitome of all evils- the dreaded community showers. Not only do you have to wear shower shoes, but whose hair is that in the corner? Gag me. Thankfully you have the sandals on, but they are the most uncomfortable things. Not to mention the awkward *hold your breath moment* as you take them off, stand on one foot, to wash the other, hoping not to touch the disgusting floor.
5. Hometown Friends.
Whether you see them once a month or only on breaks, they are the only people you can go weeks without seeing and everything goes back to normal, when you reconnect. They are the most loyal friends because, let’s be honest, they loved you through your awk middle school stage. Coming home wouldn’t be the same without your friends there to greet you with open arms.
6. Your Dog.
The first thing that immediately disheartens you at college- the no pet rule. Can I cuddle with a fish? I didn’t think so. A puppy would be great to relieve your stress every once and a while or all the time. So, when you finally go home and walk through the doors there isn’t anything better than your dog greeting you at the door with a wagging tail.
7. Your Mom.
If we admit it or not, our mom is our best friend. She’s the one who you think of when you go out in college, don’t bring a jacket and immediately regret it. She’s also the unbiased adult you go to when you need to vent about drama or stress, even if she gives you one of those “back in my day” stories. Love you mom!
8. Your Bed.
Not sure if it’s the ten feet by two inch frame of the bed or the constant squeaking, but sleeping in a dorm bed is the least comfortable thing. If you’re lucky, your parents bought you a quality bed topper so you don’t wake up feeling like you slept on concrete every night. If not, then you need to invest in one. But no matter how many cushions we stake on our mattress, nothing compares to our nice, big childhood bed awaiting us at home. You know exactly which side to lay on and how it conforms to your body. You can sleep as sprawled out as you want.
9. Free Time.
Everyone makes college out to be little work and lots of play time. Well that’s far from the truth. If you aren’t in class, you are studying for a class or working on a group project with dreaded team members, or taking an online quiz right before 11:59 PM. College is definitely the toughest thing you’ve ever done, but it makes it that much better when you go home for winter break and don’t have a single thing to worry about.
10. Your Closet.
Even though you tried to fit all of your clothes in four boxes, you are always left forgetting something you wished you brought. You may even hit your mom up to ship it. Nothing feels more satisfying then going home and having trouble deciding what to wear because the options are endless.
