While lots of students are excited to go back to school and be reintegrated into college life, there are admittedly a number of things people will miss about home. I, for one, have absolutely no problem admitting that I will miss home A LOT, once break is over. Perhaps I’m too much of a baby and a homebody, but here are 11 things that every student will undeniably miss upon returning to school.
1. The lack of obligations
One of the reasons why break is so great is because there is ZERO work that needs to be done. Finals are finished, and the next set of classes won’t begin for another few weeks. During break, the world really is your oyster, and what you do, or don’t do, with that oyster, is up to you.
2. Actually having time to watch TV
When school is in session there is no time to watch TV. The shows I once adored become non-existent during the school year. However, break is a wonderful opportunity to catch up on my former favorite shows, and perhaps, even find a new series to binge watch (I’m currently marathoning The Royals).
3. My big, beloved bed
This probably only applies if you’re living in a residence hall or Fraternity/Sorority house. I’ve never met a person who has said, “gosh, I love my Twin XL bed.” When you’re home, it’s likely that you have a full size bed, at the very least. Nothing is as relaxing as having your own bed back to yourself, and being able to sprawl out while you sleep.
4. A bathroom I don’t have to share with 20 people
Community bathrooms are…. a riot, to say the very least. Whether or not you share a bathroom with your sibling(s) or parents at home, it’s not like you’re sharing it with 20 other people of the same gender. At home, all of your belongings are in the bathroom, and there’s no need for a caddy. You also don’t need to wear flip-flops while showering, and your feet finally feel clean for once. Let’s not forget how wonderful it is to have your very own toilet too, which isn’t infested with germs from people you don’t know.
5. My kitchen
Home is great because if I’m hungry at 2am, I can simply walk downstairs in my pajamas and chow down. At home, I can eat whatever I want, whenever I want, and I can look however I want while eating; it’s not like I have to prepare myself for human interaction like I do when I go to the dining hall.
6. “Real” food
Speaking of food, being home is great because you finally get to eat food that isn’t from the dining hall. Don’t get me wrong, the dining hall food isn’t bad, but there’s something about eating a home-cooked meal from mom, or food from your favorite Thai restaurant that can’t quite compare to the lovely cafeteria.
7. My town
College towns are fun and all, but when you’re back home, you’re hit with a certain nostalgia and familiarity. The mall is here, the downtown area is there, the coffee shop is down the road, and my best friend lives two blocks away. When you’re home for break you’re essentially reliving the last four years of high school once you’re reunited with your former squad. All you have to do is pick up the phone, send out a group text, meet up at your favorite restaurant, and then realize none of you have really matured.
9. Having my mom do my laundry.
I’m perfectly capable of doing my laundry at school, but when my mom does it, I don’t have to be paranoid about shrinking my jeans… again. Shout out to you, mom!
10. My pet
During break, there is nothing more exciting than being reunited with your little friend! Pets know when you’ve been gone for a while, and I honestly believe they become sad and even a bit angry when you abandon them for an education… If only they’d understand why we have to go to school and why they aren’t allowed to come with us. Sometimes I think I miss my pet more than anything else.
11. Family
Last but not least, I will most definitely miss my family. While I may not miss the rules they impose while I’m home, I’ll miss their presence and love. Being reunited with your loved ones over break is great. Once you’re in college, you realize how much your family means to you, and during break, you want to spend as much time with them as you can before you have to return to school. Mom, Dad, and grandma— I miss ya already!
