10 Books That Will Make a Difference in Your Life

The holidays are one of my favorite times of year. A book is a great gift and what better way to enjoy this time then with a good book and loved ones. Here are 10 books that will make a difference in your life.

Wonder by R.J. Palacio

This book gives wonderful insight to looking what is inside a person. In reading the story, I gained so much from Auggie's journey of finding acceptance and most importantly learning to always CHOOSE KIND

Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson

Although this book may have dark parts,it teaches a lot about the power of a good friend. Jesse’s life was completely transformed by Leslie. This kind of powerful friendship is something that everyone needs, the kind of friend that can change you. A kind of friend that can make "you a better you".

Flipped by Wendelin Van Draeen

The novel is very powerful as it teaches the lesson about being “greater than the sum of your parts”. Another encouragement to look at the whole person, not just the parts you like. You’ll find it a confidence booster to take a step back and look who you are as whole. More importantly, look at others as they are, not who you want them to be.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Jane Eyre is another one of my personal favorites from English class. This book is intriguing in many ways. The characters are quite likable and the book keeps readers in suspense. Jane has been dealt many difficulties, but she handles them well.

Self Reliance by Ralph Waldo Emerson

The essay by Ralph Waldo Emerson reminds everyone of something that everyone needs to be reminded -- YOU are the person in control of your life. Reading this gave me so much empowerment and always reminds me in time of need to trust myself. You don't need to be perfect, you just need to be YOU!

If I Stay by Gayle Forman

This book was a deep book that contains various powerful insights on life. A personal favorite of mine is “Sometimes you make choices in life and sometimes choices make you”. I whole-heartedly agree with that and always remember that the choices I make today will forever be with me.

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson

This book is certainly based on a disturbing topic , however it is one that needs to be brought to light. It is about finding your inner voice and finding the courage to stand up for what is right. In reading this book, I have found that inner strength is essential to becoming truly brave.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

The reason this book is impactful is that not only does it stress the importance of family, but the main character is the quintessence of a strong female heroine. This book will leave you with a warm heart and a feeling of love.

The List by Siohban Vivian

What I love about this book is that it focuses so much on the superficial manner that people think. Everyone has their own personal struggle, no matter how perfect they seem. The different perspectives in the book are certainly interesting to look at and make you realize that you have a big impact on others. The twist at the end makes you realize that everyone has inner conflict and they resolve that their own way.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

This book is especially powerful because it stresses what is important about love. One of the most important things I learned is that it is not important how many people love you, but rather the QUALITY of love of those who do. To be loved by just one person is a life changing thing.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
