Wanderlust -- the desire to travel -- is a phenomenon that affects most people. People are always dreaming of traveling, seeing the world and getting to experience the beauty that other parts of the world have to offer.

When you ask people what places they most want to see, they will rattle off cities, often in far away countries like France and Italy. While these countries do have a lot of beautiful and stunning places to offer us, most Americans forget that some of the most outstanding destinations are right here in the United States.

Here are 10 places you probably did not know existed, but that you are bound to fall in love with.

1. Flathead Lake, Montana.

Flathead Lake is the largest freshwater and natural lake in the United States. It has over 150 miles of shoreline, offering tourists a wide variety of opportunities to enjoy, like fishing, boating, water sports and hiking.


2. Havasu Falls, Arizona.

Havasu Falls is a waterfall located in the Grand Canyon. This waterfall is an amazing sight to see, due to the outstanding blue color caused by the high magnesium level in the water.

3. Pfeiffer Big Sur, California.

Located in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park in Monterey County, this is a destination that encompasses land, ocean and forest. There is a wide variety of wildlife, and places to hike and camp.

4. Antelope Canyon, Arizona.

Antelope Canyon is a small portion of the Navajo nation, encompassing many tribal lands and histories, different species of wildlife and magnificent landmarks.

5. Sawtooth Range, Idaho.

Sawtooth is a part of the Rocky Mountains, and ranges over 600 miles. It is home to hundreds of small and large lakes and over 50 breathtaking mountain peaks.

6. Mammoth Cave, Kentucky.

A part of the Mammoth Cave National Park and Green River Valley, this is the world's longest known cave system, with over 400 miles of caves to explore.

7. The Adirondacks, New York.

Located in northern New York, the Adirondacks are a vast area with thousands of different trails, lakes, rivers and fields. They are also home to the longest seasons of fall foliage, and after all, who does not like to watch the leaves change colors?

8. Cherry Springs, Pennsylvania.

Famous for its remote wilderness, Cherry Springs State Park has outstanding night skies that allow you to stargaze atop a mountain at millions of stars.

9. Mount Rainier, Washington.

Mount Rainier is 14,000 feet above sea level and is home to 27 glaciers.

10. Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia.

The Blue Ridge Mountains are part of a large mountain range that spans several states, but is centrally focused in Virginia. The Blue Ridge Parkway allows visitors to explore the giant landscape.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
