An Ode To Odyssey

Over the last several weeks, I've been thinking a lot about why I started writing for Odyssey. I was a junior technical writing major with next to zero writing experience outside of my college courses. With thoughts of graduation lurking in the back of my mind, I'd spent so long hoping for some kind of opportunity to come along so I could have something... anything... to add to my resume. So, you better believe that when I saw a Facebook post from the Odyssey president searching for content creators, I pounced. Now, not only do I have something to add to my resume, I have actual content to include in my online portfolio.

I'll admit, it's not always easy coming up with new article topics each week. Sometimes, you just have to get creative. (Have a look at my profile and you'll see what I mean.) But, despite the struggles, I can say that I've learned something from every article I've ever written, and am proud of (almost) every single one of them.

One of my biggest takeaways from becoming an Odyssey writer is that I've become more interested in political issues. I don't know if it's Odyssey alone that has led me to become more politically aware or the current state of our economy, climate, public health, and divided nation as a whole...

But, when you're tasked with writing a brand new article every single week, you... well, I... become much less aloof to what's happening in the world in hopes of finding inspiration for the next article. Because of this, I've learned about how diabolical the fast fashion industry is. I've learned that sororities aren't as diabolical as I expected them to be. I've shared some positive thoughts, listed some of my favorite music, and made a few jokes. I've learned the power in sharing my story.

Not only has Odyssey been a medium of education in my life, it's given me a platform to voice my opinion without having to open my mouth. I'm an incredibly soft spoken, keep-to-myself kind of gal, and Odyssey has blessed me with the freedom and empowerment to say what I really want to say. I've been able to voice my opinion on the issue of racial injustice in our country. I've stood up for Planned Parenthood. I've spoken up for the health of our planet. And I still haven't said everything I need to say.

I'd be lying if I said I've never thought about quitting. Sometimes, I'll admit, writing my article can feel like a chore or just another homework assignment. As with any kind of relationship in life, I've had to work at it. I've had to dig deep, do some research, and pry any bit of creativity out of me to get an article finished. It's taken a lot of self-motivation. I've had to be honest with myself. I've had to grow. I'm learning my place in this world. And I have Odyssey to thank for that.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
