Mixed Emotions on Sorority Tumblrs

When sorority Tumblrs first started showing up on my Facebook newsfeed, I thought the idea was brilliant. What better way to represent your chapter? With a collection of photos that depicted your sisters as they traveled, bonded, and proudly threw up their sorority signs at every opportunity?

Plus, what girl wouldn’t want to show off all of her beautiful and fun sisters for everyone to see? We take millions of pictures throughout the school year for a reason. Creating a Tumblr account for your sorority seemed like the perfect channel to show potential new members how great sisterhood could be.

While I think the initial idea for sorority Tumblrs was created with good intentions, the trend has recently transformed into something that I believe is less flattering for the Greek community. As more and more chapters have begun creating their own pages, the more competitive the concept has seemed to become. Rather than highlighting the sisterhood of each chapter, many pages instead focus on superficial aspects of its members, hoping to demonstrate that they have the hottest sisters.

It’s not surprising this competition has formed, especially when online sites such as Total Frat Move are handpicking the hottest Tumblr pages to feature each week. Their posts begin with phrases like “try and top” so and so chapter, or this chapter is “the single hottest chapter in America.” While I think it is important to be proud of your beautiful sisters, I don’t think that should be the sole reason behind these Tumblr pages.

There is already an unfair stigma against the Greek system, depicting its members as shallow, party-focused individuals. Anyone who is in the Greek system, however, knows that there is so much more to Greek life than looking hot and partying your college days away. The friendship, philanthropy, and unwavering support system that sororities and fraternities offer is just as important—if not more—than anything else Greek life brings to the college experience.

So while sorority Tumblr pages are a new and creative way to represent your chapter, I think it is important to remember all aspects of what it means to be a part of the Greek system. There are way more important things to focus on rather than which Tumblr the guys at Total Frat Move find “mind-numbingly hot.” But by all means keep taking pictures of all the amazing times you and your sisters have—you’re definitely going to want to document some of the best four years of your life.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
