"The Legend of Zelda" has always been my favorite video game franchise. Since its series inception in 1986, the games have been enthralling us with heroic fantasy storylines, a rich lore, memorable characters, spot-on gameplay mechanics, rapturous art styles and sweeping music to wrap it all up. The newest game about to come to Wii U and Nintendo’s next console (the mysterious NX) looks to have all of these things in spades after seeing "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" shown off at E3 this year.
Zelda’s trademark conventions are going to change somewhat, and the excitement among the fan community could not be more on the wavelength of the game directors’ insightful vision to combine the open exploration of older titles with the accessibility and epic scope of the later games.
Interestingly, Link will have to survive in "Breath in the Wild." He eats, hunts, rock climbs, shield sleds, boards a raft, slays monsters and flies with his paraglider. He really tames the land that appears so majestic (peaceful yet unsettling) and reminiscent of open air painting and classic Japanese animation.
The trailer’s main theme echoes with that atmosphere too. Everything from cooking up a meal to opening ancient shrines is accented perfectly by the song used in the three-minute-long video. See and hear for yourself here:
Judging from the presentations at the Electronic Entertainment Expo this year, this game is set to be truly immense. Only the Great Plateau area was shown off, and a close look at the map tells us that that region with multiple biomes and features in which the open worlds of some previous Zelda titles could fit into is the smallest piece of the country as a whole.
As a fan who has connected with these games and loved the franchise for more than a decade, I could not be more excited to open my eyes and set them upon "Breath of the Wild" next year. It really looks like an adventure unlike any before.
