On October 5, Yom Kippur weekend, Emory University's AEPi chapter was vandalized, as two swastikas were spray painted on their fraternity house. The Jewish community in Emory came together after this incident by wearing blue to spread awareness about the hate crime. The original story started to gain some traction around the nation. Various AEPi chapters starting posting photos online across all social networks, indicating that they stand with AEPi Emory and stand against hate crimes like this one.
Led by fellow ZBT UF
brother Daniel Orlan, we decided to do what all of these AEPi chapters around the country have been doing. As Daniel puts it, "Hate crimes are still a very relevant issue throughout the world, today. The best part about being a member of a Greek organization is that it allows individuals to be a part of something much bigger than themselves. We need to use this as an opportunity to come together and make a stand for those who can't always do so for themselves. As the grandson of a Holocaust survivor, what happened at Emory really hits home for me, and I just want to bring people together to help raise awareness and prevent future hate crimes of any sort."
As members of a national and international Greek community, we hold ourselves to the highest of standards. Hate crimes like these call for a time of rallying together and unity. Although ZBT does not have national affiliation with AEPi, we stand with them. The Greek community, as a whole, fraternities and sororities alike, need to come together as a single unit when facing adversity, not just our ZBT chapter. The hate crime AEPi Emory recently experienced should never happen. This serves as a lesson to us all - anti-semitism, and all types of discrimination, still exists today.
Whether you are Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Black, White, etc., we should all come together and fight against these acts.
ZBT UF stands with AEPi Emory and stands against all hate crimes.
