The date is February 14, 2005, and the internet is soon to be introduced to a website that will change media for the next 11 years. Now fast forward to now. YouTube has over a billion users, and according to their website, reaches more individuals than any cable network in the United States. When you think about it, that is a lot of people on a single site.
Now what may be driving this number up is the fact users can make YouTube a career! YouTuber is the common name for someone who releases consistent videos on the site to generate income. For some that income can shoot up to the millions! Users can "monetize" videos causing some form of advertisement to be attached to the video and therefore, compensating the user with cash for permitting ad space. Now why I am laying out all of this information?
Recently, YouTube has released a new set of conditions for monetizing videos, commence #YouTubeIsDeadParty.
Quick question, what was my first amendment right again? Oh, that's right Freedom of Speech! Now sure I don't need to monetize my videos, then why the hell do I need to use YouTube when there are much more user-friendly platforms like Vimeo or even here on Odyssey? YouTube don't you get that the YouTubers bringing more users to your site are the ones that can no longer monetize? Again #YouTubeIsDeadParty is a thing that needs to happen.
It is sad to see something that is the perfect platform to bring together many communities do something so detrimental to the structure. If I were YouTube, I would go back to the drawing board and redesign new conditions that don't cut off the income of some of the biggest influencers on the site.
