Hey you! Are you trying to procrastinate studying for that midterm or writing that paper? Need a new show to get addicted to on Netflix because you’ve already finished “Stranger Things”? Boy, do I have the show for you.
Your new October Netflix Binge should be “Easy.” No, literally. The name of the show is “Easy.” It’s a Netflix original show with only one season currently up and only eight episodes. They aren’t even long! They’re only about half an hour, so you don’t even need to feel that bad if you finish the whole season in one sitting….like I did.
Alright, truthfully, I’m not a Marketing major, but I’m going to try and sell you on this show.
Here we go:
What is this show about?
The show is an anthology which means every episode follows the story of a different couple. They are, however, all connected and some of the main characters from a previous episode make an appearance in another.
Therefore, because every episode is different, it’s hard to give a clear-cut explanation of what the show is about. In general, the individual episodes follow the lives of couples all dealing with different stuff in their relationships like one married couple wanting to experiment with Tinder and having a threesome, another couple that is married with kids and have problems with their sex lives.
Basically, long story short, this show is centered around sex, love, and relationships. Whether you’re single, in a relationship, or “it’s complicated”, I think it’s safe to say that you can relate to at least one of the characters featured.
Why should I watch this show?
First off, this show feels real. I applaud every single actor for their fantastic job because every episode and every interaction felt very organic and authentic. I didn’t feel like they were reading from a script or playing a part. It felt like I was actually watching their lives unfold which honestly, I find very rare in a show.
This authenticity makes it easy for the view to relate and sympathize with the characters because you feel like you are getting to know the lives and emotions of real people.
Another applaud-worthy factor is the diversity that is showcased with each episode focusing on hetero and homosexual relationships, ethnic diversity, and inter-racial couples. Rarely do you ever find this much diversity featured in a single show without some kind of prejudice or negative connotation. Every single one of the relationships are shown in a raw and authentic way.
What do I mean by this?
For example, in the episode that features a lesbian couple, there is no overcast of discrimination or prejudice. This allows the viewer to focus on just the relationship and how these two young women bond and interact with each other. They are human beings facing the same stuff as any other relationship.
I know some people might say that this is actually a negative thing, and that it’s important to showcase the discrimination for awareness purposes, but I would actually disagree and argue that this is the future of television shows; showing homosexual relationships as a normal relationship because it should be treated as a normal relationship.
My opinion is, if we start showing homosexual relationships in a normal and accepted way, it will slowly become more normal in our everyday lives.
Plus, with only half an hour, I would rather see the beauty of these two young women and their blossoming relationship than more discrimination.
The same mentality goes for the inter-racial couple. It’s shown in a normal light. There is no mention or any hint of discrimination but rather is focused on the couple’s struggles of trying to make a long-distance relationship work.
I would much rather see these kinds of relationships become the norm in movies and television shows rather than cis, white, heteronormative couples which dominate Hollywood.
I would like to see in the next season an episode on a transgender couple and preferably a couple with someone facing a disability. I think it is important to show the many different types of relationships in movies and TV shows to break the cis, heteronormative, white-washing that perpetuates a singular norm for society.
It’s 2016 almost 2017, Hollywood needs to diversify the content it puts out because it does have a huge role on what we deem as “acceptable” and “normal.” The more Hollywood showcases different types of people and different types of relationship, I believe, the more normal they will become.
Okay, that’s all well and good, but are there any famous people in this?
Oh, do I have a surprise for you. Remember Orlando Bloom? That cutie, British hunk of man? Yeah, he’s in this. Also, the one and only Dave Franco is in two episodes! Also Emily Ratajkowski is in an episode, too.
Little spoiler alert, Orlando Bloom plays the husband in the threesome episode. Also spoiler alert, you get to see his bare butt.
If that’s not convincing enough to get you to watch the show, then you’re a lost cause.
