With move-in just around the corner for most of us college students, the act of leaving behind your friends and family is not on the top of things you're looking forward to. Inevitably, there are so many emotions you go through when you move from place to place. A lot of us are veterans to these feelings, but the incoming college freshmen are experiencing all of this for the first time.
First comes the sadness. Leaving behind the place you have made your home for the past 18 years is hard, and the thought of not coming back to these four walls every night is a hard pill to swallow. You find yourself wondering about what kind of new memories will be made in the next place you call home.
Next there is the anger, or more specifically the frustration. It's easy to let the hassle of packing, transporting, and unpacking get to you. No matter the distance, whether your college is just down the street or all the way across the country, there is bound to be some form of frustration when you have to move all of your belongings.
At some point during the move, there is going to be that moment of denial. Even if it's just for a second, you won't want to leave behind all that you know for the unknown. It's scary to take that jump into living on your own, and even though you know you're ready to take it, you are still terrified.
Finally, you are ready to go. You've said your goodbyes and now you are ready to say your hellos. Hello to new experiences, new people, and a fresh start. You don't know what's ahead of you but that's what makes this moment special.
Then there is the excitement. As you fill the walls with pictures and make your room perfect, you realize something: This is your place. The place where you get to grow and mature, making all sorts of mistakes that mark you as your own person. Moving into college will take you from who you were into who you are meant to be. So welcome to college freshmen, welcome to your new normal.
