School work, sports, job, extra circular activities, internships! How can one person handle all this responsibility and still have a social life and on top of that stay healthy in both mind, body, and spirit? Most would credit their ability to balance it all with good time management skills and organization, but that doesn't seem like enough to keep you from wanting to rip your hair out when you get overwhelmed.
Stress is beginning to become part of a young person's personality and it is not healthy at all. By age 18 we're supposed to know what we want to do with the rest of our lives and in college we are dealing with the constant influx of papers, projects, and tests on top of keeping our GPA's high, internships and eventually finding a job. Not to mention athletics, clubs and, oh yeah, a social life. Wanna hear a joke? Sleep... Yeah I don't get it either.
Young people can forget to eat because they're so busy trying to cram 48 hours worth of stuff into just 24 hours. They're not sleeping and what they're eating isn't always the healthiest thing. When you have the weight of the world on your shoulders it almost seems impossible to make it through each semester. Everyone relaxes differently, so just find what works for you.
Read
It could be a chapter in a book, or a magazine article. You will be up to date on a current event, or one step closer to finishing that novel you've been dying to finish.
Workout
Exercise releases endorphins in the brain which make you happy and more positive.
Yoga
Yoga will help you relax your mind, body, and spirit while increasing your strength and flexibility at the same time.
Listen to Music
This can be done in the car, or even the shower. Jamming to your favorite songs is an instant mood boost and can make the commute to your job or internship much more bearable.
Social Media
Scroll through your Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. See what your friends are putting up on Snapchat. Even post something yourself.
Coffee Break
Treat yourself to Starbucks or Dunkin'. The caffeine boost will help you get through the lull of the day.
Finding small things to do each day to treat yourself will improve your overall well-being and outlook on life. You don't have to be the person that does it all, just keep your activities manageable. If a club or sport isn't making you happy then it is okay to quit and focus on the ones that make you happy. Remember, you're a priority in your own life!
