Why Your Friend Having A Puppy is Better Than You Having One

As much as I love puppies, I am not ready to be the sole care taker of one, which is what friends are for.

Puppies are the center of all girls’ existence. There is arguably nothing cuter than a fat little ball of fur that is a puppy. I personally have two dogs at home that I love more than anything in the world; however college is a different atmosphere, one in which I do not want a dog.

You are probably confused as those two statements are contradictory, but it comes down to one word, RESPONSIBILITY. At home “my” dogs, are really my family dogs, which means there are four people available to take care of it at all times. Here in college if I got a dog it would be my sole responsibility. No thank you. Therefore, I am very happy being just the aunt, friend or grandma to my friend’s new puppies.

Since I am not the puppy’s mom, I do not have to wake up at 2 a.m. to go walk it when it decides it has to use the potty, or make sure that all sharp and dangerous objects are out of its reach. In fact, I don’t have any part in actually taking care of the dog, that is all on my friends.

As the friend/aunt/grandma, I get only the perks of having a puppy in my life. If I am having a bad day, all I need is to stop by their house and cuddle and kiss the cute baby belly of the puppy and I will instantly feel better. Once I am done loving the pup, or it becomes time for class then I can just leave, no strings attached.

Not to mention, I get to buy it tons of toys and adorable outfits to play with it! Next thing you know the puppy is a pumpkin!

In addition, being the friend of someone with a puppy makes me a back up baby sitter, which is a plus. I get to watch the sweet little pup for a couple hours at a time. This is just enough time for a play session, maybe a walk or two and then, my personal favorite, NAP TIME. Puppies sleeping in whatever wacky position on you is one of life’s greatest blessings. I don’t care how uncomfortable I am; I am not moving if that means I disturb the peace of the puppy’s sleep.

Finally, no matter if you are the puppy’s mom or not, being around one means constant unconditional love. A quality I have yet to find in any human other than my parents, which make puppies the best animals to have.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
