I'm young, and I'm hungry, and I'm broke -- as are most of you, my fellow college friends. Yet, somehow, I can still watch Netflix, and that's all that's really important because it means that I can watch "Young & Hungry" and that's totally better than eating, right? Sometimes, I think I love this show more than food, and here's why.
1. Gabi is the best worst best friend.
This girl kills me. She has an endless list of food puns that she’s ready to share at any moment. Even when she doesn’t know what she’s doing, she’s so earnest in all of her actions, meaning that her blunders aren’t annoying and repetitive.
Gabi is unbelievably lucky at getting herself (and everyone around her) into unfortunate situations, including ruining her friend’s birthday, accidentally outing him to his parents, and setting him up on a date with the wrong guy. And this is a good day. Despite all the chaos she causes, she tries her best to fix the situation, even if it means embarrassment for herself. At the end of the day, she always decides to tell the truth and try her best to help in whatever way she can
2. Yolanda is a sass master.
It’s so refreshing to see an older female character who is unafraid of being loud and sexual and in your face. She knows everything that goes on, but the show never penalizes her for being a “gossip.” It just presents her as she is, and it’s great. Yolanda is not past her prime; she’s at the top of it.
3. Josh is the arrogant geek you love to mess with.
I’m so tired of arrogant male characters who think they rule the world. I’m so tired of geek characters who think they’re entitled to everything. I’m so tired of underdeveloped male characters whose actions are excused because they’re boys.
Josh is a tech guru who only makes a billion dollars every day, but is still an adorable dork. His arrogance causes problems, but he’s never malicious and keeps growing as a character. The best part of the show is when everyone know more than their genius boss. Yay, for character development!
4. Sophia should be #FutureGoals.
Sofia Maria Consuela Rafaella Rodriguez doesn’t bow down to anyone. She is a brilliant soon-to-be lawyer with a wardrobe that I might actually kill for. She’s a huge Lorde fan, an impressive negotiator, and an actual queen.
It’s also wonderful to see a Latina best friend who isn’t reduced to racist stereotypes. Sophia is openly proud of who she is but she’s not confined to a few shallow archetypes.
5. It will always make you laugh.
"Young & Hungry" takes some time to get good, but once it hits that mark, it will continue to make you laugh. Everyone is still figuring out their characters during the first few episodes, but by the middle of the first season, they hit their stride and only get stronger.
I have a tendency to talk at the TV when I’m engrossed in a show, and I couldn’t stop when I watched "Young & Hungry," much to the annoyance of my roommates! The entire cast had me in stitches, and as soon as this is posted, I’m going to go watch more.
