With the first half of the semester over for most students, what better way to celebrate than sitting down and reading something for fun that wasn’t assigned by your professor.
The 5th Wave – Rick Yancey
With the final book in the series nearly upon us, this story of survival is one that will appeal to all readers and leave you hanging on the edge of your seat. Packed with action, aliens, and romance the true value of being human will push you through the series one page at a time.
The Mortal Instruments – Cassandra Clare
With a hit television show on Freeform, more and more viewers are being exposed to Clare’s series. "The Dark Artifices" series takes place five years after the events of "The Mortal Instruments" and "The Infernal Devices" is the prequel of the series. Clare takes her Shadowhunters very seriously. Each story is full of action and the power. Though I do warn you if you watch the show before you read the books you’ll be in for the shock of your life because the two could not be any more different.
The Lunar Chronicles – Marissa Meyer
What if Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Snow White had to work together against a single evil Queen? That’s what Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles does in four volumes, with two extra books: "Fairest" which follows the "Queen’s Point of View" and "Stars Above" which is a series of short stories that is a companion to the series. Unlike most Young Adult Fantasy series, this series gives strength to the female characters and matches them equally to their male counterparts.
Fangirl and Carry On – Rainbow Rowell
These two books aren’t a series, yes I know, but this is the first time that a fiction book would bring about a slash fiction book. "Fangirl" follows the story of Cath as she’s trying to figure out her life during her first year of College. This book would appeal to readers who are going through the same situation. Cath is also a fanfiction writer for a story called "Carry On Simon Snow". Throughout the novel, Cath, (sometimes with the help of her sister Wren) pens this fanfiction that mirrors a book series similar to the "Harry Potter" series. However it follows Simon Snow. In "Carry On" the story comes to life, like "Harry Potter" if Harry and Malfoy were roommates and the only reason they hate one another is because they’re in love with one another.
Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson, Heroes of Olympus, and Magnus Chase
What hasn’t Rick Riordan covered in his books, after taking on the gods of the Greek myths. He is now working on a series based on the Norse Myths. These series appeals to readers of all ages, with a mix of mythology, quests, and humor. All of the characters in these series grow up and become strong in their own way.
Happy Reading!!
