You Will Not Be Everyone's Favorite Cup of Coffee

And that's okay.

You Will Not Be Everyone's Favorite Cup of Coffee
Sarah Pace

You will not be everyone's cup of coffee. And that's Okay.

You might be wondering what that means. To me, it means that everyone has their differences, and everyone has people they do and do not get along with, and that's okay. You may not be everyone's favorite person, but you can always be yourself because, with billions of people in the world, there are bound to be those who share the same "type of coffee as you."

Dark roast, light roast, mochas, lattes, cappuccinos, frappes, grande, medium, tall, small, venti, large, the list goes on. Coffee comes in all different sizes, flavors, brands, and colors. Some like iced, some enjoy scalding hot. Some enjoy it black or like my good friend and I call it "hot bean water." Some love to have so much cream and sugar you would barely know its coffee. However you like your coffee, I hope you can find those who drink the same kind as you do, but I also hope you can find yourself drinking your own special cup while others enjoy theirs.

To be different and comfortable while being yourself is an accomplishment. It's a way of truly living because although you know not everyone agrees with you, and you are not "everyone's cup of coffee," you can still live your life. It's a beautiful thing, to see that we are unique and accept it.

To accept those who are different from us is also a large accomplishment on its own. To know that someone prefers their iced coffee over your hot mocha is an interesting concept. To not share the same views, but to be able to calmly discuss the differences is something this world needs a little more of. So I hope you take the time to maybe taste the other coffee.

To broaden the spectrum of coffee that we sip from is yet another means to grow comfortable in one's own world while also experiencing something different. To continue to educate oneself, grow in knowledge and understanding, to sympathize, to listen: all of these are ways to broaden our taste buds to the different types of coffee available to us. I hope you let yourself be immersed in the ideas, cultures, thoughts, and unique perspective of those around you and their particular "type of coffee." I hope your type of coffee is not the only cup you sip from for the rest of your life. However, if it is the only cup for you, enjoy it all the days of your life.

Last, but not least, I hope you realize that while you are not everyone's type of coffee, not everyone will be yours, and that's okay. It's okay to be different. It's okay to like video games, playing chess, encyclopedias, science, music so loud it drowns your thoughts, paintings so bright they blur your vision, or the quiet of your room to let your thoughts simmer. It's okay to feel unique, special, different, eccentric...but I hope you also know you are loved. You may not be everyone's type of coffee, but you are someone's favorite first sip on a cozy Sunday morning.

Stay happy and stay weird, my friends.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
