We interrupt your internet browsing session--yes, laughing at cat videos and creeping on your first grade best friend who you haven't talked to for ages on Facebook--to bring you this important announcement: It's okay to be a suck-up.
Like, seriously... What's wrong, per say, with doing exactly what somebody wants and even might expect from you?
It really gets on my nerves when people call other people suck ups. Yes, as you might have guessed, I was one of those kids in school. I did my homework if not on time, a few days early; I followed the teachers' directions to a T; and I even asked clarifying questions if I didn't understand that my classmates were too afraid to ask. "You're such a suck-up, Torrie. You're such a teacher's pet."
Been there?
Seriously... Why is it so bad to be a suck-up? I refuse to apologize for following directions, and I absolutely refuse to apologize for taking the time, energy and interest to invest in someone and their personal feelings. If someone in that "authority" role-- a teacher, boss, or the like-- you are obligated by social contract to follow what they say and/ or ask of you, within reason. Why not add a little flare by going above and beyond? Is that sucking up?
So, to all my fellow suck-ups: Keeping sucking! Keep being a faithful, reliable, enjoyable person, son, daughter, co-worker, employee, student. Enjoy your investment in others and be proud of the fact that you care about yourself and others to acutely and with expertise follow directions. The world needs more suck-ups.
