I'm a writer, so of course I'm going to tell you that you should write more. I love it so I automatically want others to love it, too. But there are actually a lot of good reasons why you should write, either on a daily basis or just every once in a while. Whether you keep a journal, make a blog, write little bits in your school notebook or even on a napkin, writing is something everyone should add into their lives.
One of the simplest reasons is that you can write down literally anything you want to. Mad at someone and don't really want to confront them? Did someone hurt you? So happy you might explode? Write it all down and get all of the thoughts out onto the page. It will ease any angry or sad feelings you have by getting all of the emotions you knew you had into words, but it will also allow for the happiness to keep going, to be able to have the happy thoughts in front of you to relive them.
Another reason is that it really expands your imagination and creativity. Even if you're not the "creative type," try writing a story or a poem, you might surprise yourself. You might even find that you really enjoy doing this type of writing. The more you write creative, imaginative pieces, the more creative your brain will become, allowing for more interesting writing as time progresses.
Writing is also a huge stress reliever—well, it is for me. Whenever I'm stressed, nothing relaxes me more than pulling out a journal or opening a new Word document and putting all of my thoughts onto paper. Even just writing about how my day went and what I did that day calms me down and relieves my stress. Sometimes, writing about my day will help me realize why I'm stressed and figure out how I can avoid it the next time. This might just be a "me thing," using writing as a stress reliever, but next time you're stressed, try writing and see where it gets you.
Writing can help store a lot of memories, too. Nowadays, people rely solely on pictures and videos to store their memories, but writing can be an even greater way to keep memories. With pictures and videos, you don't get the whole story. Sure, you can see the colors and hear the voices, but that's really about it. When you write down the memories and experiences you have, you can describe so much more. You can describe the colors during every part of that moment: the trees, the sky, the clothes, everything. You can describe the sounds you hear. Yeah, you can do that with videos a lot more, but being able to think of those sounds is something special. But there are things you can do with writing that you can't with pictures and videos. You can describe the things you feel. The feeling of the rough tree bark against your hands or the soft, furry blanket keeping you warm. Those are things that help to make memories what they are, and pictures and videos can't capture that. Memories can so easily fade away, but writing the important ones will keep them with you forever.
I know most people will look at writing as something they have to do for class or as an assignment, but it really can be so much more than that if you open your mind.
