Carry me back to 'ol Virginny!

Whether you boastfully come from NoVa, or you hail from the deep in the Appalachains, we can all relate to these undeniable realities of coming from one of the most historic, diverse, and interesting states in the country. So, in case you were confused as to what it means to come from Virginia, I have this handy little guide.

You might be a Virginian if...

1. Seeing rebel flags is an everyday occurrence.

2. You wear a tank top under a winter coat, just in case it's 80 degrees instead of the forecast snow.

3. The acronym "SOL" means two things.

4. Your heart stops a little bit when you hear the traffic report.

5. School is canceled when it looks like this outside:

6. You know what Brunswick Stew is.

7. You're always looking forwards to NEXT football season.

8. King's Dominion vs. Busch Gardens

9. You have no idea why the hell Virginia is for "lovers."

10. Your backyard doubles as a historical site.

11. You're used to going somewhere out of town for fun.

12. Camouflage is acceptable formal attire.

13. You hate UVa.

14. You hate Virginia Tech.

15. You like both UVa and Virginia Tech because you have relatives at both places.

16. You forget that Southern Virginians don't know what WaWa is...

17. ... And Northern Virginians don't know what Bojangles is

18. You scream "7-5-7!!" every other minute in case there's someone in the general area who may not know what you're from VB.

19. You know that we're technically not a "state" (we're a commonwealth).

20. No matter how hard you try, you can't stop loving it.

I was born and raised here in Virginia. I've lived all around the state, but never outside of it. I have big plans and dreams for my future which will hopefully take me all over the world, but this regular ol' average joe of a state will always have a special place in my heart, just like I think it will for so may of you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
